Hi Everyone,
I've decided to scrap my Blue TA22/SR20 project and focus on my Targa Top TA22 (72). It was previously engineered and setup for a V8 - but that was 20 years ago so i'm thinking a newer 1UZ-FE might make for a decent swap. I know Jamie has done a twin-turbo version into a TA22, so i wouldn't be a complete original (although i'm yet to see a targa TA22)
Basically looking to see what i'm going to need to modify in order to get the motor in and engineered in WA. So far I've heard the engine fits in the bay, but the exhaust fouls the steering box, so that would need to be sorted, also anyone know how much room i will have in front of the motor and what sort of gearbox combo would handle the power if i decide to got twin-turbo or, more likely, supercharged in the future. Any info on these would be great, if anyone can tell me the dry weight of a 1U vs a 2T-G that would be great also, i'd prefer it still handled well when i'm done.

beer me!
I did do a search, first thing i did actually. Found plenty of info on 1Us into other TAxx/RAxx series and general performance mods etc etc but not much info on 1Us into TA22s specifically - maybe i'm searching under the wrong criteria (TA22 1UZ-FE) - if you have an actual relevant link feel free to enlighten me but otherwise simply posting search in big letters isn't really helping anyone out here.
Also something to consider is that people may have NEW information or progress that they wish to share with the group. If Jamie or anyone are on the forum and can help me out it would be much appreciated.

Give it a rest joecool... not everyone has your obviously elite forum searching skills.
That is just a photo... not much info there anyway.
You might be on your own here camshere, you cannot really use Jamies TA22 as an example due to the large amount of mods it had before the 1UZ went in.
Expect to spend a lot of money doing this (like >$5k).
Youll need custom engine mounts, maybe engine xmember, maybe steering mods (for engine bay room), new brakes, custom tailshaft, diff, suspension, etc.
And because its a targa top, youll probably have to stiffen up the chassis.
Oh... its a TA22, i think under the new rules you wont be able to get it road rego'ed.
Check on that first.

Whats the tare weight of the stock TA22 on rego papers?

off my head its 940 or 960.
Definitely less than 1000.
So you woulnt be able to even put in a 3L let alone a 1uz.
*correct me if im wrong*
According to the new NCOP rules (which are in force in WA), the biggest motor you can put in a 940kg car is 3760cc (3840 for 960kg - 4 times multiplier).
1UZ is 3968cc, so you'd have to find somewhere Toyota stating that the cars factory weight is 992kg or heavier.
Failing that just fill out a pre-approval mod form, and send it in.
Worst they can do is say no.

the 3 times original tare mass rule applies to NSW (according to Rev 2, April 2005)
but obviously this doesnt apply since he is in WA.

Hey cheers guys, appreciate the help - guess there's not much point getting into the nitty gritty of it if the WA laws won't allow me to put a 4LT in there. I'll have to find out whether thats going to happen first.
I didn't realize that there were new laws that had come into effect, guess i'll have to keep my fingers crossed, as i really had my heart set on a 1UZ. Such a shame that i could stick a hypo turbo 4 in there no probs that puts out well over the power of a 1UZ, but i may be stuck without a 1UZ purely on cubic capacity.

would definately need to go with rack and pinion steering. i was doing an engine conversion on a TA22 recently and noticed that xmember looks very similar to the Xmember of a AE71. good thing is, the latter already has the rack attached to the xmember. im not sure at how close it comes to fitting but im sure someone on here has tried it. note that a AE71 xmember has been succesfully fitted to a RA28 by a toymodder
hello
why did you have your heart set on a 1uz?
Kugzs - The guy that i bought the car off was actually a mad Celica nut, he was part of the original Classic Celica Car Club of WA. He built it into a show car and then took it off the road to do the targa conversion and to install a V8. I wanted to stick with a V8 to sorta build it the way the original owner had planned - but i wanted to also stick with a toyota motor. 1UZ seemed perfect for the job. Factor in the strength of the motors, the unique aspect of the conversion and the overall power output and i think it would be fairly nice, my only reservation was weight distribution/handling.
If i can't do a 1UZ then i'm probably not going to do a toyota motor. An SR20 will probably be the next best thing.

So has the chassis been strengthened after the Targo top cut?
coz any V8 is gonna twist that weakened chassis like a pretzel.
