The gen3's also are reported to run more advance on the ignition.
Gen3 1g-gte plugs are all grey, and the ECU plugs are not only grey, but differ a fair bit from the previous gens.

gen 1 = 7psi - Water to Air Cooled - Grey Injectors
gen 2 = 9psi - Air Cooled - Yellow injectors
gen 3 = 11 psi - Air Cooled - Fluro Green injectors
In regards to modding, Gen3 is the best of all they start with more power so therefore better to start with
Get ya Zorst done , Get a bigger frontmount cooler , Get a Boost controller, get a single turbo conversion to something semi-large , add 14PSI then do skids![]()
Gen1 has yellow injectors too. The 1GGE has the grey ones.
I recommend a Gen3, they're the newest and have the most go. They also have *slightly* larger turbos and a more advanced ECU.

The gen1/2 ECU's are made using straw and mud, and rely totally on chance to give the correct mix of fuel and ignition timing.
Gen3 turbos are nice, you can easily throw them on a gen1/2 engine with a little work - just get a dremel and a grinding bit. Works a treat!

Seriously though, none of the 1G ECU's I've come across have been very good.

Bring on some form of aftermarket ECU then!

you can see the gen3 makes the most power from factory, 210hp
definately the best to start out with.
ive ran my stock gen3 on 16psi on occasions...seems to handle it well
by stock i mean all but a large IC and 2.5" mufflerless exhaust
hello
I'm running a gen2 w/ gen3 turbos at 15-17psi, seems OK, but the turbos are getting a little tired i think.
I dont blame them, they are often glowing bright after a good run at night.

thats interesting.
my plug leads on my 1GGTE tell a story of 1992..........unless they've been replaced at some stage. although in saying that my motor is immaculate inside.
