Upgrade to a gen 3 and sell me the gen 2 with engine mounts and RWD exhaust! Easy decision.
Hi all,
I have a TA23 with a 3SGE in it, it is a Gen 2 and goes pretty damn well, I have been wondering about the upgrade path for some time now and I think I am going to stick it out with NA just because I canI have a Wolf 3D Ver 4 running everything and the engine is stock apart from having the TVIS(ACIS) lopped off it and a set of custom RWD extractors, it was putting out a good 80rwkw and now it seems like it is putting out more.... its cat was collapsed and the muffler blocked, so now that is all free flowing.
I am unsure of what to do first as I am unsure of the condition of the engine in there at the moment, she is blowing smoke but I am pretty sure that is due to running a little rich up high. Is it worth me buying a Gen 3 for around the 1.5k mark and building it up a bit first, or is it not that much better than the Gen 2, I cant remember if the Gen 3 had oil squirters, a search will soon happenBut any thoughts from the 3SGE gods would be awesome.
BTW this is my weekender so it can be a little crazy![]()

if you can source the engine i'd definatle say go for it. with the basic mods down pat you should be fine (intake, exhaust etc) you could possbily upgrade to a more "aggressive" set up cams aswell....maybe larger throttle body.
jonchia on these forums has got his gen1 3s-ge up to about 105kw at the wheels....talk to him about some possible mods?
or if your pockets are realy deep try and track down a beams 3sge![]()
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
The beams would be mad, but I want to stay away from VVT cause my wolf wont run itMight just keep the gen 2 and work on that... but the oil squirters. And a few things with the original conversion bother me... the engine hasent been tilted(its mounted flat) and the sump has a very nasty angle on it.
A 2S sump while wont be completely flat will be closer. I'd be a lot more concerned about this than oil squirters..
I wouldn't put too much thought into oil squirters.. While a good thing, plenty of toyota engines dont have them and im sure toyota knew what they were doing. The bigport 4age's dont have them, 3t's etc. A lot of them are highly strung engines that us toymodders thrash and they hang together.
Hehehe the toyota factor, thanks for your input. BTW you sump is one gigantic mother. Will the 2S sump require me to play around with the pickup?
because the engine was designed to be mounted on an angle toyota only put oil drains on the intake side of the head. When you put this engine in RWD format normally you lose this angle and the result is that oil pools in the head on the exhaust side. To overcome this i've seen workshops tap two or more holes in the exhaust side about level with the holes on the other side of the head. A line then runs from these new holes into another hole which has been tapped in the drain galley on the intake side.
Im not sure if the sump being on an angle is critical to the engine running healthily. I'd guess that you may have oil starvation issues when cornering or accelerating hard again as it was designed to run on an angle and perpendicular to the way it is mounted now? 2S sump and pickup would be cheap insurance!
Do I need the 2S pickup aswell or just the sump? Going to search the wreckers soon.
Sump and pickup mate. Also grab the tray that sits under the 2s pickup. Cant remember for sure but I think you might need that too.
The gen 2 head will be better up in the rev range, the gen 3 head will be better low and mid range - the other differences are negligable, especially when driven by an aftermarket computer. PM sent re sump needs!
Really, thats sounds good, my 3s doesnt feel that good up high(well above about 5k).Originally Posted by Clint
