oil prevents friction... synchros need friction.... need a balance
sucks the $$ oil may nto be right tho![]()
is the oil need to protect the gears or the bearings or the synchros?
will changing to another for the synchros affect the rest of the box?
My R154 was sent off to be rebuilt because it was being a real bitch to get into gears and i figured the synchros were gone.
Called up today to find the box has been pulled down and is in 100% tip top condition, "almost like new", however the synchros have been glazed as a result of running redline lightweight shockproof gearoil.
I was told to actually change to a blend of oils that i will confirm tomorrow, but apparently the redline (which is highly rated by many people) has 'over-lubricated' the synchros, causing no gear engagement.
So here i am putting $120 of oil into the gearbox thinking its the best thing for it, and its actually not.
Has anyone else had this experience and can someone actually explain whats happens to prevents the non engagement?
I just don't understand how an oil can be too good.

so the solution is to mix the redline with something inferior?
Hi,
Crikey, that's interesting to know.
I was thinking about Redline oil for the next gear change. Hmmm, I'll have to give it some thought now.

Meh, look on the bright side, you don't have to pay to have the 'box reco'd, plus you no longer need to spend $120 on gear oil!
I must say that's the first I've ever heard of Redline oil not being the nizzles shizzle, chuck some regular old castrol VMX-80 in there & see how she go's. I also don't really understand how oil can be too good though.
What about redline super lightweight gear oil? Although I don't suppose you wanna spend another $120 unless you're sure it's gonna work.
$160 / litre ??????? Ohhhh yeah that must be that stuff that comes in a solid gold bottle and comes with its own little pixey that instals it for yaOriginally Posted by Draven

On a serious note its the first i have herd of this too. Im using the heavy weight stuff in my w57 and havent had any probs yet.
Black supra: What redline oil was it -- light weight / heavy weight etc.
Have you viewed the syncros for your self to get an idea of what the glazing looks like?

Bad luck for some.
Until my box suffers from 'glazed synchros' ill continue to be amazed at how good this stuff is.
p.s im on my 2nd year and 2nd gear oil change of RL LW SP GO and the box is still going strong, and gear changes still require a whole lot less effort compared to before the use of this product.

Redline MTL is the best thing for R154s
According to Redline it's formulated to provide increased friction at the syncro interface.
It fixed my R154 which was so bad on second gear that I almost rebuilt it.
black supra : maybe you just dont drive hard enough ! lol

i had mtl in my r154 gearbox when i first had it rebuilt, but 1st gear thrust washer shat itself after 5000kms so it went out and i ran cheap gear oil in (Castrol VMX 80), then the 4 and 5th chipped teeth so i had to get a new cluster fitted and AFTER that i put redline shockproof in and knock on wood its been good for almost a year now and ive done a track day, about 5 skidpan days and a sprint day... as well as a few mundaring 'togue' runs and a once down the drags.... shockproof is good.

It's redline lightweight shockproof.

ha hah ah ah ah love it!!
i have thinking and maybe it is actually true to a certain degree.
The redline oil is a performance gear oil and is designed to work in harsh conditions where excess load and fast shiffting is seen. If you were to drive easy on the box all / most of the time then maybe it will cause the syncros to glaze ???
I dont know black supra ( glen ) so dont know his driving style but this could be a possible cause.![]()
