A stupid question from me but are you sure it is a 12R, I thought hiluxes were running 22Rs by 82.
Hi everyone
tried searching various forums and googled as well, but no info coming up... Does anyone know How to set the ignition timing on a Toyota 12R motor?
Vehicle is an 1982 Hilux, and timing setup is a pin coming out from block, but there are four notches cut into the front pulley... which one do I line up with the pin???
Any help would be appreciated...

Timing as per your handbook 8-10 deg BTDC. if in doubt stick a screw driver into number one with plug out and slowly wind motor around on pulley until you dont feel any further raise in the piston this is TDC. TOP DEAD CENTRE. Dont forget the dwell angle and points gap as well and the plug gaps.
if you can;t find 12R try 2R 4R. All the same give or take a degree. Better still get a handbook, I just got one for $9.99 on ebay. QED.
it's an rn40 hilux, 12r on engine block and on compliance plates... there is a spike coming from the engine block to line up with, but there a FOUR notches in the pulley about 1cm apart from each other... might have to get the manual on this one...

Yeah get handbook.
Did you do the screw driver check for tdc to see where the notches are?
JUST CHECKED HANDBOOKS.
First notch is zero.
Last notch is static timing COLD BTDC 20 degrees.
The other two are 5 or 7 HOT 60C BTDC.

Turn motor over until just before first mark lining up with indicator pin.
Pull out number 1 plug and stick a small screwdiver shaft as vertical as you can in spark plug hole.
Carefully turn motor forward whilst feeling top of piston move with screwdriver, check mark where screwdriver stops moving up, continue forward until screwdiver starts to go down and the mark between them is TDC.
Grab a protractor and hold against centre of front pulley, use a straight edge from TDC to centre of pulley to line 0 degrees on protractor, from there use straight edge to read off what other timing marks are.
Still doesnt help what timing should be set on, most workshops will have a "Relim" manual or similar and should be able to look up the original timing advance for you.
