    Default Electric Thermo Fan Specifications

    G'day all.

I am after specifications on different brand thermo fans. There seems to be absolutely nothing out there on the Web that can help me. Davies Craig are about the only ones that have specs on their website.
What I am trying to do is this..........
I am currently running a Davies Craig 14" fan in the front of my RWD 4AGE. This is attached as a pull through setup to a custom 3 core cut down Holden radiator. Size of the radiator core is 370x310mm so it takes up the entire core and then some. It does an adequate good job of keeping the engine cool. Problem is that with so little room in the front I have had to run a single pulley harmonic balancer for the alternator and water pump. There is no room to run a double pulley with this setup. There is only approx 3mm as it stands now. I now have in my possession a power steering kit that i wish to add to my vehicle but have no means of running the pump on the engine with only one pulley. From all i can see the only way is to find a thinner thermo fan so I can run the correct harmonic balancer to turn the power steering pump. A fan no thicker than 50mm is ideal but as I have said it is hard to find anything out there. I have been to some of the major resellers and found nothing of interest. I know the Davies Craig 12" fan is 51mm thick but am concerned that it will not have enough flow to keep the engine cool. According to the stats it has approx 840cfm flow compared to the 1000cfm of the 14" I have found a little info about a 12" ICE thermo fan stating 1500cfm that is only 50m think. This sounds too good to be true seeing that the top of the range Davies Craig cannot come close to this. Also I cannot find any other sizes or know of any resellers of this brand. Anyone know where ICE brand Thermo Fans can be found?
I would like to know if anyone else can add some information here and maybe start a thread of all types of stats about thermo fans of what they have used in what vehicle with what setup etc. It would be nice to know how others have approached these problems and give people a better understanding of what to expect. I have searched around on this forum and others and pretty much get no information on specifications.
Anything others can add would be most helpful not only to me but to people without much of an understanding of Thermatic Electric Fans.

P.S I really didnt expect it to be so long

Hi mate, I have an ICE 14" fan on my 302 windsor and its a very good and reliable fan.

Is there any reason you cant put a fan on the front of the radiator as a pushing fan? have two 12s, one in one out if the need be?

Thanks for the info. Where did you source the ICE fan from? I havent found anyone that sells them yet, although it is still early days. I have absolutely no room for a front mounted fan unless i wanted the fan to sit in front of the grill. The radiator is as far forward as i can mount it.

Thanks again Robbo. I have done the usual Google search and can only find one place that has stock of the 12" ICE fans and absolutely no other information. I have found a few references in other forums from others that have used them them and they do all say that they are a good fan but thats all.

The airflow as quoted by the ICE fan "may" be correct.... at ZERO pressure

The real cfm figure depends at what pressure it pulls that amount of air..

I went thru all the research recently when I was looking at running a new set up in my Cressida and found that some companies quote their cfm at ZERO pressure (ie, NOT pull through a radiator...)

See the following on the DCSL14 (Davies Craig 14")

As you can see - the cfm drops away the higher the pressure..

The "average" pressure increase when pulling through a NEW standard type radiator core is about 30-40 pascals. Older radiators that may have bent fins or partially blocked cores etc, or situations with a Air Con condensor that is mounted Directly in front of the radiator may increase this up to about 80 pascals from what I was told by one of the DC tech guys..

So look at the cfm figures at about 40-50 pascals to see what they will pull through in a REAL world application..

I chose twin DCSL14's in the end and they have worked brilliantly and are very quiet.
When standing at the front of the car, you can feel the air being pulled through the Radiator, Condensor, Transmission Cooler and 75mm Intercooler..

In my experience you can have one fan covering less than half of a partially blocked core still provide sufficient cooling while stationary, especially if you don't have air con.
I had a single 12" fan on the MX83 before replacing it with twin 14s (similar to Southo) - the upgrade was really only to allow air con to be used while stationary.

Went through the same issues as you trying to find specs. In the end a tape measure (to find something that *might* fit) and perusal of a shop's refund policy (basically to try it on) was the only way to do it.
In the end the fans that fitted were thicker than the space I had, but their motor mounds fitted in between belts and pulleys.

whoever mentioned, for a 1uz...id suggest a 90 on 85 off, as commonly found on camrys, corollas etc. 95 on is a tad too hot imo...

Thanks heaps for the info guys, much appreciated.
After ed_jza80's advice I have decided on a 12" Spal fan using a shroud on the radiator like Project Sleeper posted in the picture. There is a lot of nice info for these fans on their website www.spalusa.com and found out that they are sold here in Australia through PWR who seem ot have pretty good prices. They also have some good stats along side Davies Craig here http://www.pwr.com.au/pwr/content/accessories_fans.htm
I'll let you all know how it turns out.

    Cheers

    Good stuff..

Just make sure that theu can give you the cfm rating at about 40-50pascals of pressure.

Unfortunately all fans will have a lower cfm rate as the pressure increases.

There is one such 10: fan that flows an incredible amount according to it's "free air" cfm rating, but it is halved at 50 pascals..

I am sure that the Spal fans are not as bad as that (in fact I suspect they are quite good) but better safe than sorry and out of pocket...
