Default Pics of S13 susp into AE86 and RA23 fitment

Ok gents, this follows on from a couple of other threads. Notably:
    LCA discussion
    S13 susp into AE86 guide

Today Jez aka Rallystanza and I fitted up some S13 susp to a sprinter (for fitting to an RA23 look at JonRA23's post below). The hardware we used was:
    Standard AE86 strut top
    HSD HR S13 coilover
    S13 hub/steering knuckle

We fitted both MX62 and S13 LCAs (60 and 50 mm longer than AE86 respectively). And 15 by 6 (normal Toyota-ish offset) and 15 by 7 (+12) wheels. Both sets of wheels has 195/50/15 tyres on them.

Now from the factory the S13 coilovers have some camber adjustment in one of the two mounting bolt holes (see the test rig below). We checked with camber at both max and min possible.

Fitting the MX62 arms showed that the stock caster rod and swaybars mount holes wont be able to be used. However the chassis mount slots in perfectly and looks suspiciously like the bush is identical to the AE86 inner bush.

With MX62 arms and camber set to the minimum possible produced the following:
    15by6 wheels

    Link to another shot

    15by7 +12 wheels

    Link to another shot

To fit the S13 arms we filed 2mm off the length of the inner crush tube. For fitting the normal 12mm Toyota bolt was used in the 14mm Nissan crush tube. With the 15 by 7s at max camber we got this:

So it looks like either arm can be used. Both need slight modifications to work. With wide wheels, the track of the MX62 arms will be silly. However the S13 arms need body mods or custom crush tubes to work. Also please dont ask what camber was exactly, this was just a mockup and we couldn't measure it.

Hope this is educational and we will update when any more ground breaking news crosses the desk.

Wow, thats some awsome stuff there mate. Good on ya for doing something about it and mock fitting things up. The info here will give an answer to many questions out there about fitting S13 suspension into the AE86.
This thread will be valuable for some time i reckon.

Speaking of Jez, that's him lying down on the job in the background of the LCA shot.

And yes, he deserves equal credit.

    hmmmm...this would be legal yes?

i.e. more legal than the cut and shut control arm...

I always thought this would be a good swap for an MA6x... 5 bolt conversion, direct fit of Z32 brakes and possible offset change in wheels.

    Hi

+ rep for Hen and Rallstanza
Rather than start a new thread i will post here to keep together.

Hen if you want it out of here i will delete and repost.

    S13 strut into RA23.
Used S13 strut top, strut and spindle, standard S13 strut springs will not fit in RA23 tower, will need to use coilovers.
    GE Sigma Lower control arm.
S13 Ball joint should press into Sigma LCA, both measure at 40.22 press fit.
All bolt up other than slight elongation of camber top bolt holes, about 1.5mm.

Gives 2.5 degree negative camber with s13 adjustment all the way in and no camber tops. (10mm in at top over a 400mm rim diameter).
Gives a 20mm increase in track, (+30mm per side for LCAs, -20mm per side ball joint to rim face)

have more pics if anyone is interested.

    regards
    jon

^^^ There's Jez, give him some rep.... if you like.

Jon, that's great info to hear. I can't believe in all my stuffing around I never realised S13 and GE balljoints are the same diameter. I seem to remember the Sigma ones being "grooved" where they press in. Could this be a problem?

Also the exact setup you describe would work on an AE86 too, with possibly less stuffing around.

Will have a new S13 balljoint over next couple of days and press one together, pretty sure it should be OK.

from memory, early smegma/galant ball joints have splines on the outside ... so if the gimps pressing them into the control arm get it wrong they also munt the control arm.

great work guys +Ve Rep to whoever the forum lets me grant it to!

    pointless attempt to subscribe...
How does the r33 hub compare to the s13 hub.
I know of 180sx's that convert to 5 stud by use of the r33 parts sooooo....??????

jon apparently i love you too much already to love you any more

i think you have to use an S13 bearing pressed inside the S14/15 hubs (and i would presume R33) as the spindle diameter of the 5-stud hubs is larger.
