Sorry one last thing, HKS run a 9mm lift seamingly with out probs or a need for springs. Is the extra .3mm really going to make that much difference?
Hey guys,
I have a little extra cash available and I'm thinking of getting a set of cams. I'm definatly getting cams, I just need to work out duration and lift. The plan was a set of 264 Jun cams. Is 264 going to cost me too much bottom end in a 1jz? I've got gears to tune it a little but I don't want to rely on them.
Also is going from a 7.69 lift (stock) to a 9.3 (JUN) going to give me problems with the springs? also is that lift going to cause any other unforseen issues?
The engine has just under 90k on the chassis clock, some are gonna start taking shots at me for believing the numbers on an import but it is a very fresh engine either way. I'm also considering upgrading the intake valves to the 2jz at the same time, not that it matters!
Any helps good, thanx in advance.

yeah the lift will make a big difference.
Im not familliar with the 2j so i cant say for sure weather or not you will need new springs.
At a guess i would say you will as most factory springs are designed around the cam profiles and hence changing the lift by 2 -3 mm will prob cause bind

It's actualy for the 1JZ but thanx, I was hoping not to have to bother with new springs. Stupid Q but whats bind? Similar to float?
Coil bind is when the spring is compressed to the point where all the coils are contacting each other such that it cannot be compressed any further.
From memory the 2JZ valve springs coil bind at around 9.5mm lift. I have no idea whether the 1JZ springs are the same so best bet is to take the valve springs to an engine builder, set them in a valve spring compressor at the installed height and measure how much travel there is till they bind.
Personally, I would change them anyway. I would imagine that with bigger cams you also intend on turning up the wick. With the increased positive pressure on the intake side and I presume bigger (therefore heavier) valves, you'll need to have springs with a greater seated and compressed pressure anyway to better control the valve and prevent float.
I agree with GT.
You could possibly get away with stock valve spring but if you are going to the trouble of fitting some aggressive cams and different valves then you may as well get the springs at the same time otherwise they may become a limiting factor. If you are still going for that 300rwkw stock turbo 1j then you are going to have to rev the thing pretty hard!
Also, I am fitting US 2jz cams in the near future which have 8.7mm lift and I will be using stock valve springs. If I was made of money, I would be getting Jun 264's and springs and retainers.
Fk, I was hoping not to need new springs. Makes it more $$ then I wanna fork out just yet. It was going to be an added bonus boost before I get her back on road. Jun don't d anything but cams for the 1j do they? the site only lists the cam shafts.
Any other companies that would make new springs for the 1j?
Yeah chris its soughta still a goal tho, I'm looking at going to bigger twins in a year or so. I wanna get the engine its self pumpin out power first, and make sure its ready for the extra power too!![]()
Crower and Ferrea do springs for the 1jz. There was a group buy on SF.com for crower cams and springs and retainers.
yeah the springs were way to xy through that GB, $400 usd is way too much. Nengun can get JUN HKS and greddy springs for about 250 a set! Greenline is down at the moment so I can't tell whether they can get any in for the 1J so its them or a perhaps a local mob...
Hey is there a side list of australias fastest stock turb'd 1jz?lol
you should get in contact with Performance Springs (www.performancesprings.com.au) they list a 2JZGTE springs are available on their site, they may have 1JZ springs as well. I know they make a 4AGE 20V spring, so they may be able to help you. They are also a Toymods sponsor...

Thanx man, checked them out last night but I sent them an email just before too, they have a spring set for $260. Not too bad, not too much to pay for extra security.
Another stupid question, Is there anyway of changing the springs without removing the head? I haven't done it but I know the V8 boys use a type of spring compresser that involves the head being off to compress then remove them. Still true for the 1j?
look for the old "valve stem seals on a 1JZ" thread
