Hey fellas,i ended up using a couple of 4WD inline fuel filters with the rail return running back into it,one has a glass bowl on it.They held just over 1 Litre.
My EFI pump is just below them attached to a bolt on the plenum brace.
Pressure to my EFI pump was more than adequate(measured by inj specalist)the 1G is stock@12psi,3"exhaust
I attached them to the firewall near the plenum(oh yeah car is a RA28/1GGTE)it has been around Hidden Valley Raceway Darwin with no prob(just scary).
this has been suggested before and i think was poo pooed, but i had them and did it anyway and"crikey"it worked.
I dont know about higher HP application but the size of those inlet and outlet holes were massive, try and find 10 mm fuel hose up here.

I did this cause i did not want fuel like that in cabin even in a quality surge tank , as anything connected by rubber hose and hose clamps will/could pop/fling off in a rollover.
    Cheers Guy

I have an in tank EFI pump, as knocked up by o-man. It's probably an R32 gts-t fuel pump mounted onto the RA23 pickup. Only problem with this is there's no baffling in the sump. Owen reckons it didn't surge even with less than 10L in the tank, but I'd feel safer with a bit of baffling... Which is the hard part... I was thinking about making an in tank surge chamber- basically a can with holes drilled in the side, but it wouldn't really hold a lot, 'cos it still has to fit through the small hole in the top of the tank.

For me, a full in tank solution would be ideal, but this involves lots of stuffing about .
Nikita the RA23 is almost finished .

Here is a thought, The later model RA28 GTs and coupes in the states had an electric in tank fuel pump. Low pressure as they were not fuel injected.I wonder if you got hold of one of those and adapted a high pressure EFI in tank pump to fit. As they scavenge from the very bottom of the tank, I would tend to think that fuel surge would not be a great problem unless very hard cornering and stopping was your thing.

Out of interest, has anyone got rough prices on what a custom 50ltr alloy tank with baffles, provision for intank pump etc, would cost?

im liking the under bonnet idea cos i got heckloads of room, if and when i do my 20v conversion i may have a little less but a farq load still.

would there be any harm in running ur return line to ur surge tank rather than back to the main tank? also another stupid person/question, could i run my electric lift pump into the surge tank in the bay then from the surge tank into an efi pump?

    cheers

Just to throw one in from left field, some race car tanks are filled with an open cell foam. This is primarely for impact resistance but also does a really good job of baffling the tank. It would only take up maybe half a litre of volume so space is not a problem provided you removed space for the gauge float.

Anyone want to try some of thoes 2 part open cell foam mixes in a drum and see what they can do with it. You would need to find one that is fuel resistant though. It could be a very easy solution to the surge tank issue. I think finding one that is fuel resistant will be a problem though.

You can actually buy the foam stuff and ive heard of people buying it and cutting it to shape then fitting to the tank and welding it back up...

But if your gonna weld the tank, you could build in an internal surge tank.... I was thinking that the 2 part foam could be just mixed, poured and then dig out the float area. Ideally you would want a cup area at the feed point to give a little extra resistance but that starts to complicate thangs again.

i just got mine done last week.

1.5L surge tank, custom fuel tank fittings, 910 Bosch Pump, small 'pick up' pump and new bigger metal fuel lines and the obvious rubber lines between surgetank and fuel tank etc. extremely happy with the result. mounted it in the boot, pics below

the hole in the middle of the boot is for my sub, just didnt put it back while taking those piccies

as you can see its a work in progress, planning to board up the fuel tank and the surge tank in the future, just need to finish exams and ill get onto it.

    cheers

ca celica, that is exactly the setup these guys are trying to avoid. No matter how good the installation, there will always be some vapour bleeding through the rubber hoses. All steel lines would eliminate the fuel vapour, but would make it much harder for the average backyarder to install.

My feeling, is that the space between the spare tyre well, and the jack well (under the car)could be utilized for the surge tank. Think outside the square, the surge tank does NOT have to be a vertical cannister. You could even gravity feed the surge tank, by cleverly installing the pick up in the existing fuel tank drain.

mmm, man i was going to put it in the spare wheel well but i believe where it is is a much better place. at the moment im not getting any 'swelling' through the lines, so no fumes present. at the end of the day, its not that hard to install metal lines instead of the rubber ones. as you can see i've got new metal lines going from 910 pump to engine, and there was a fair amount of fiddling around required.

thanx for your input though, always welcome to ideas, and i guess if it becomes smelly i'll know why

    cheers

That's a near identicle setup to one that my brother has, and there's no fumes in his car....
Hasn't the fume problem got more to do with how well the boot is sealed to the cabin? I don't really like the idea of having a storage of a couple of litres of fuel in my engine bay.

yea, i mean when i bought the car it used to always smell of fuel, and i just thought it was the way it is, (old car smells) lol. but yea when we got the fuel tank out, one of the clamps wasnt on properly and quite a bit of fuel would come out when filling up.

and im with you rob1, no chance id be putting a 1L amount of fuel in an overheating environment .

ill post up pics of the finished product in a couple of weeks, should look a lil better then

Question Re: 1st GEN Celica Surge Tank Ideas

Is there any problems building a long tall surge tank? Capacity may well be reduced, but if it is a proper swirl pot, wouldnt a decreased radius increase the benefits of the swirl?

i was thinking narrow and tall, located in the front wheel well/under the guard, much like another toymodders hidden washer bottle? (bigworm?)

Just an idea, I have both a 23 and a 28 and wanted them to be similar for my own secret reasons, hence not in the boot ... blah blah...

well in my "put a RA60 into a 28" project ive done the crossmember and pwr str.

im seriously looking at the options of fitting a RA60/5 EFI tank to the 28.
