Default Cigarette lighter socket has no power...

    Hi Guys,

Well, bought my Mum one of those Road Angel things for her birthday so she knows where all the school zones and speed cameras are. She loved it, awesome, go to put in car, turn the keys, nothin...works fine in 2 other cars, so it must be the cig. socket.

She doesn't smoke and doesn't have an incar phone charger so I have no idea how long the cig. socket hasn't worked for.

I checked the fuse, it's on the same 20A fuse as the radio, radio works OK, and I did continutity over the fuse and it was OK.

Pulled some of the interior back to have a look at the back of the socket, the connector all seems to be plugged in OK and doesn't appear to have any loose wires.

Lightly ran a scourer over the socket, incase it was oxidised from lack of use....still no go.

Other than a broken wire somewhere I'm all out of ideas, any suggestions of known faults for a '94 Auto Corolla Sedan?

Failing that, trip to the Autoelec on Saturday morning....

    Cheers,

Check the wiring at the back is getting 12v with a multimeter (with the key turned to acc)

If it is then check the ground, if the ground's ok then the ciggy lighter socket itself is probably fubar

If there is no power then run a new wire to it, shouldn't be too hard, tap into an acc wire somewhere, put a fuse on it and a spade connector to attach to the ciggy lighter

as said, check with multimeter for power at the back of the socket.

failing that, check continuity between the fuse and the wires that plug into the back of the socket.

    simple enough.

I had this problem just recently with my cig lighter. I'd never used it in my car, and when I go to plug in a mobile phone charger, the whole thing falls out in about 3 pieces! Fortunately it wasn't too hard to get to once I had the front panel of the dash out. Prick of a job to get to if you've no idea of these dashboards. Neither power wire nor ground were connected. Mine uses a 15A fuse, but I guess your mum's is 20A for a reason.

But as said, it's probably a stuffed lighter socket, so replace the cheap option first (I think a new lighter goes for some silly price in Supercheap), and if that don't work, then hit the sparky up for some cig lighter lovin'.

In most of the cars ive seen the CIG fuse is on its own. I could be wrong.

But i would do what the rest of the guys are saying. You can tap it of the radio for ease but from the ign switch then fused is bit better.

Are you sure it's on the same fuse bud? My radio and CIG fuses are separate.

could be the same, my clock, radio and cig are on the same circuit

if your certain its the same fuse, and are all out of ideas run a new wire out of that 20amp fuse surely the radio wouldnt pull 20amps. problem solvered..... bloody corollas haha.

another thing i found with plug in cig lighter devices, is the dicky thing on the end is adjustable (on a thread), some cars sockets are slightly deeper than others and need to be wound out a fraction for it to contact the terminal in the back of the socket.

    maybe that shall help.

Every Toyota I've been in has had a separate fuse for cig lighter, and I know the 162 has because I had to come on here for help because I didn't know which fuse it ran off as it had no fuse cover in the cabin. But then there's differences in fuse locations with different models of the same car, but I digress here.

On the back of some cig lighter sockets there is a small peice of wire that joins the positive wire to the center connection. This wire is a kind of fuse and can be blown but still look intact.
Pull the cig lighter socket out and check the wire by pulling on it with a small screwdriver or pair of long nose pliers. If it is broken you can just solder a small peice of wire in its place.
