    Default 1g-fe / 1g-ge

One is from the is200, the other is an older motor i'm sure some of your are familliar with.

So my question is this: if going by the letter codes toyota uses for its motors, the only difference between the two is the top end of the motor. I'm not sure what the 2nd G in 1G-GE stands for, but i know the F in 1G-FE means the motor has an economy head!
Both 2L straight sixes - so what is interchangable between the motors, if anything? Perhaps headers?

Please exuse the question if it is silly, i know 1jz, 2jz, 3s, 4as, and 3m's but not 1gges! Someone teach me! haha
    thanks team.

G means twin cams each driven by the cambelt and wide angle between the valves. F means narrow angle between valves [and therefore cams] and the exhaust is gear driven from the inlet cam. because the different valve angles the pistons are different.
inlets are differnt as the 1G-FE has siamesed ports and the 1G-GE has individual runners.

i'm pretty sure that fan belts are the same due to same arrangement on the block. timing belt is not as single cam drive for F dual for G. i'll check parts manual re the water pump and thermos.
    cheers

From what i've seen, the water pumps are similar. To use the 1G-FE water pump you need to grind down one of the ribs on the top side, otherwise it will foul the plastic timing belt shround.

the pumps carry the different part numbers, but appears to be similar

the pump gasket is unique for the 1G-GE / 1G-GTE but this can be substituted on the 1G-FE.

    Ah nice, pics!

The top left rib (while looking front on at the pulley) from the 1G-FE pump needs to be "modified" with a grinder

Mine has been working fine for ages like this

    siamesed ports? like... 3 ports?

don't they both have 6 for intake and exhaust?
or the f has 6 and the G has 12?

The Blocks are the same, the front plates are slightly different, the rear plates are the same, if the 1G-GE is a late one the crank is the same, but the rods and pistons are not.

oil pumps and housing is the same, the is200 water pump will fit, but the cam belt cover from the GE will not mate up to it snugly... the thermostat setup is different too.

yep the G has 12 inlet runners [in 3 groups of 4]

but, like the F, 6 exhaust

yeah, but thats just a TVIS manifold - nothing to do with the F vs G as a general statement

F vs G is just valve angle/cam separation, and the cam drive configuration

G certainly doesnt imply 'performance' anymore either. things are trending back towards narrower valve anges these days at the high end of the motorsport spectrum.

you are correct especially as the 1G-FE had at least 13 years more development. the 1G-GE ceased production in the early '90s
