Importbitz brought in a manual aristo, so John should have some info on what was done handbrake wise on that car.
ok so the A340E in the aristo has already started to bug me, and its a tossup between a T78 and other associated goodbits or an R154 conversion, after speaking with a supplier yesterday it seems that I can get a good deal on an R154, clutch, tailshaft yoke, shifter and slave.
Manual conversions arent overly difficult but i do have some queries...
Firstly could anyone reccomend which master cylinder and pedal I could use? obviously its going to be a longshot at anyone having this information as no one has done one yet in this country.
Secondly, wiring...obviously the neutral start switch will have to be bridged (not difficult im sure someone would have done this as there are a few cars floating around with Aristo 2JZ's in them (norbs?)
The second part of the wiring stage is making the reverse lights work, I think I read something about that when peewee performed the manual conversion on his cressy, it hazard it would be similar on an aristo? or maybe not?
Lastly the handbrake....this is going to be the most difficult bit of the conversion, I have already sussed out mounting points and im thinking of modifying the centre console to have it coming out the passenger side, ive seen it done on a couple of jap cars and although they have the common JDM tyte y0 untidiness I think I can do it neatly...maybe some serious customisation of the centre console? Also is it possible to have custom handbrake cables made? I would assume it wouldnt be a cheap exercise but way less painful than test fitting 50 different handbrakes
ideas/opinions/ideas??!!
many thanks
Matt

oh really!
he may have a part number from the master cylinder that was used as well
thanks for that info mate, ill drop him a line today![]()

Ey matty. Annoying you already eh
The reverse lights are fairly easy, they are usually either supplying 12v to a wire, or bridging a connection. Easy to do with a multimeter and a relay to either flip 12v or bridge depending on inputs and outputs.
As for the NSW and then switching back into D for cruise to work, Cruzida had a good idea a while ago. Basically you hook up a relay so when you turn the key to STA it pushes 12v to the NSW and makes the computer believe you are in either Neutral or Park. But when you release the switch back to IGN2 or IGN it gives power to the Drive wire and therefore allows the cruise control to work (assuming all the other inputs work).
I reckon JZA80 might be the place to look for pedals and clutch MCs too.

A340E ftl...
ok thanks for that info...you wanna tackle the wiring? you can be part of the innagural australian aristo manual conversion![]()

Re: handbrake cables. There are a number of places that can do these. Best bet if no one knows of someone who does them in your area is to go to a decent diff shop that does a few diff conversions on old cars and ask who they use for the custom handbrake cables.
not totally sure on the manual swap altho ive seen a couple of aristos with the r154 so it seams to be the way to go but check this link out on the handbrake conversion... i was looking around when i was going to convert my cedric to manual and found this was going to be pretty useful

thanks for that shane, I was kinda hoping I could remove the front section of them (they usually split in two somewhere near the front of the diff dont they?) and get a new front section made...but ill give the ring around at a few diff placesOriginally Posted by YLD-16L

All the handbrake cables I have seen are able to be separated at the point where they split, they usually split not long after the handbrake mechanism in the transmission tunnel.Originally Posted by MR 1JZ
The second half was made to suit the diff/brake change on mine and just used the factory first half. All looks completely stock.
Hm, im wondering if some variant on the Camry line would work for handbrake cables. Because the Avalon line shares the same floorpan but has a floor handbrake, so i wonder if that might work.
Failing that, Power Brakes in Norwood can re crimp cables for you. basically all you have to do is figure out how long they need to be and then go there to get them recrimped.
I could do wiring, so long as i knew what the wiring pinouts for the 2JZ in the Aristo is like. But it does sound like a LOT of effort.
P.s. if i was going to put my Cressida to manual, then the relay switching is how i was going to get around the NSW.

cool...thats what im trying to attain...hence why im going for the maunal over the T78 also...legality issues play a large part...Originally Posted by YLD-16L
im giving you permission to do whatever needs to be done to make the NSW work and the reverse lights come on...as long as its neat...none of this messy shit...thats whats going to suck about doing this conversion...firstly its not the soarer...and it has to be legal...and neat..but should be good in the endOriginally Posted by takai

for the reverse lights to work, you connect two of the wires in the auto-box harness to the two wires coming from the reverse light switch in the manual box, I can't remember what the colour codes were when I converted my JZX81 to manual.
In that car I just bridged the neutral start switch at one of the junction plugs up near the ECU, others just bridge the wires in the auto-box harness plug down in the tunnel. I actually removed all of the auto-related wiring from the engine loom in my car as I didn't want excess wires hanging around.
Wiring would be far simpler than wiring up an Aristo engine into another manual car. Youll need to bridge the nuetral start switch and that should be it(in terms of ECU). Dash lights and reverse lights should be a piece of piss too.
Fitting the pedals etc and find suitable parts for the clutch operation might be the hard bit as I thought Aristos only came out in auto? If this is the case I expect there will be no provision for a slave cyl etc.
I have aristo pin out diagrams here somewhere. Will dig them up sometime today.
(They are only slightly different to JZA80 pinouts)

Ah, thought it might be just a simple selector switch. That makes it very easy.Originally Posted by JP
After you bridged the NSW did you have cruise control?

My car didn't have cruise or ABS, I would have really liked cruise but the frontcut didn't come with it and my GX81 didn't have it originally either.
