    Default Toyota Chassis Codes??

    I'm confused ?

    Now....

    Ok, this has got me bothered and I want to work it out now.
    M = Engine
    X = chassis
    # = To my understanding was the generation of car.
    # = Weather it was a coupe (2) 4 door sedan (3) wagon/lift back (8)

    But something has just blown my theory out of the water, I know the final number changed with the type of car but with the 'X' series in particular, something just doesn't make since.
    And that's the corona mk2 MX22 and 23 coupes. cause how I understood it the last number determined what the body type was.
    is it Generation specific or what???

    Hi,

    I never thought the last number signified the chassis type. That is, 2 or 3 or 8 etc, did not signify anything.

    I beleive the last 2 digits to specify the generational version of the chassis. For example, the TA22 is a T-engined, A-chassis, 22nd generation (or variation) of the A-chassis.

    The TA23 is a T-engined, 23rd variation of the A-chassis.

    The last number doesn't mean anything to me, as they're all over the place and don't signify 2-door, liftback, 4-door etc.

    My greatest mystery is why there is a TA27 liftback and an RA25 liftback for ostensibly the same car, but with different engine/drivetrains? Why weren't they called the RA25 and TA25... or RA27 and TA27?

    M = engine
    X = Chassis
    2 = generation
    3 = design number?? capacity change number?
    I reckon the right-most digit doesnt follow a pattern. It doesn't always designate a body style change, but seems to denote a facelift revision or capacity change.
    eg:
    RA23 is not a four door, and RA28 is not a wagon.
    RT132 comes in liftback and coupe (JDM) but both have an 18R varaint of some sort (18R, 18RGEU etc).

    I have put a lot of study into the RT10* and RT11* series Coronas. With this series the last digit relates to capacity.
    Sedans:
    TT100 - 1600cc 2T (JDM only)
    RT100 - 1600cc 12R (JDM only)
    RT102 - 1800cc 16R (JDM only, maybe NZ too)
    RT104 - 2000cc 18R (Aus, JDM, USA, Sth Africa, Phillipines)
    RT105 - 2200cc 20R (USA only)
    Coupes:
    TT110 - 1600cc 2T (JDM only)
    RT110 - 1600cc 12R (JDM only)
    RT112 - 1800cc 16R, 16RB (JDM, maybe NZ)
    RT114 - 2000cc 18R (USA, JDM, Sth Africa, Phillipines)
    RT115 - 2200cc 20R (USA only)

    yep, the numbers done mean anything about the type of car (sedan, coupe etc).
    SA63 and RA65 are the same car besides engine but have different numbers.

    MX22 and MX23 is one after the other ; )
    o, and the 2 door Mark II's arnt actually coupes, they are hardtops and cant be registered as coupes.

    Is the interior different in any way?

    Hi,

    No. I assume you mean major interior changes, as opposed to interior trim changes.

    Interior and exterior trim changes were usually denoted by a multi letter suffix. For example, the TA22-H is the automatic TA22, The RA25-MQ-GG denotes JDM GT interior/exterior trim specifications, and the RA25-H signifies the automatic RA25 ST model.

    I know what you're saying/asking... but I haven't seen anything different to the interior of a TA27 to make it different to an RA25.

    With the 80's it somewhat determined suspension.

    MX72 - Wagon with Solid Rear
    MX73 - Sedan with IRS
    MX83 - Sedan with IRS
    LX80 - Sedan with Solid Rear
    JZX81 - Sedan with IRS

    Then there is

    MZ20 - Springs/Shocks
    MZ21 - Airbags
    GS130 - Springs/Shocks
    UZS131 - Airbags
    UCF10 - Springs/Shocks
    UCF11 - Airbags
    UZZ30 - Springs/Shocks
    UZZ31 - Airbags
    UZZ32 - Active Suspension

    So there was a definite pattern during the late 80's to mid 90's.

    But on the flipside there is the GZ10, MZ10, MZ11, MZ12 which all share the same suspension, but the large the last digit, the bigger the motor.

    I've come to the conclusion that the last digit means NOTHING on its own, but requires the 2nd last digit to determine what it means.

    last digit is just a sequential number made at design time.

    proof of this is the RT142 corona.

    This was available with IRS and solid rear, 4door sedan, wagon, etc. There were subtle changes when they went from the ST141 to the RT142, most notable were tail lights and indicators etc.

    RA40 is another good proving point, available either coupe or liftback, with major exterior and minor interior changes in 1980, with no vehicle code changes.

    It also doesnt mean too much for production run, as an earlier revision of a chassis could have been given a later production run, just it was for a different market, so it didnt matter. things like the RA24 in the US vs the RA23 here, the RA24 was made available slightly earlier, even though it was put on the drawing board later.

    So, in recap, the first 1/2 letters is the engine family, next is the chassis family, then the first 1/2 numbers is the generation, and the last digit is sequential 0-9 denoting where on the drawing board it sat, not what happened on the production line.

    TA23 = 1600cc
    RA23 = 2000cc

    this myth is TOTALLY busted

    Its significance changes between different model cars, in the 70's for example the last digit for Corolla's was body style
    KE25/TE27 - Coupe
    KE20/TE21 - 2 or 4 door sedan
    KE26/TE28 - wagon
    You can't compare the last number between engine types though, so a wagon can be an 8 or a 6 depending if it was T or K series powered.
    In the 80's things changed a bit, to use Corolla's again it was a capacity thing for each type of engine.
    TE71 = 1600cc
    TE72 = 1800cc
    AE70 = 1500cc
    AE71 = 1600cc
    AE85 = 1500cc
    AE86 = 1600cc
    Later model stuff tends to follow the capacity thing but there may be exception for different stuff depending on the particular car. Best plan is to compile data specific to the model you are interested in and decipher it. Over at www.Club-K.co.nz we pulled together a heap of chassis codes to be able to get a definitive answer on decoding your Starlet plates, it is a pretty good resource.

    Hi,

    But there's more to just engine sizes, in regards to the Corollas, for different numbers - isn't there?

    There's more difference between the AE71 and KE70 than the engine. The body styles are slightly different, aren't they? Can you take AE71 body parts and bolt them straight onto a KE70, and vice versa?

    Yep, same bodyshell with different crossmember and front panels. Everything interchanges from the dash back, and the front panels can be interchanged too. The last KE70's even had AE71 type slope nose front panels. I almost bought a 1983 KE70 like that. I've also seen an early KE70 upgraded with AE71 front panels.

    The original KE70 had the 4K and the square nose. Then there was a short time where the body styling was updated to the slant nose, but still remained a KE70. Then the AE71 replaced the KE70, with the 4AC engine and slant nose. All square nose ones you see are KE70s, and most slant-noses are AE71s, but there is a proportion of slant-nose KE70s. Easy way to tell is to look for the "Hi-Cam" badge on the front guard, this indicates that its a slant-nose KE70
