Just guess.
Nothing wrong with a bit of suck-it-and-see.
First guess would be
Red - positive
White - negative
Yellow - signal
If that doesn't work, swap white and yellow
Gday Team
I have a question for any one who might be able to help. I have a W58 gear box from a MIII supra that I have put in my Celica. The problem I have encountered is that I now need to connect the Hall Effect sensor for the speedometer to my speedo which is now a Ultra-light Autometer gauge. This is all well and good but I don't know which colour wire represents what from the sensor.
There are three wires Yellow, Red, and White coming from the sensor one has to be negative, one power and one signal. Anyone got any idea which is which???
Any help would be much appreciated.![]()
Cheers

could you not test the wires from the factory wiring loom?
It would be piss easy to identify 12V+
... then using continuity buzzer you can find EARTH pretty easy.
...... butt scratcher?!
Negative. I got the gear box from a wreckers so no factory wiring loom and the original gear box from the celica had a cable speedo. Other wise I would agree testing it on the factory wiring loom would definatly be the go.Originally Posted by The Witzl
And CrUZida thats my guess too. I just want to see if anyone knows before I start contecting it up and potentialy damaging either the sensor or the gauge. Toyota seem to think its
white = +ve
red = -ve
yellow = Signal
but they were just guessing
I have also been told
Yellow = +ve
White = -ve
Red = Signal
but they were also unsure.

Its looking more and more like I'm just going to have to take a guess.
surely an MA70 wiring diagram would provide the necessary pinouts![]()

MA70's have a mechanical speedo, as do all MkIII's. Methinks this box must be out of a MkIV if it has an electronic speed sensor? In any case a MkIV wiring diagram is what you need.

You sure the later MA70's don't have electronic speedo's?
The MX83 Cressida changed over in 1991 to electronic (89 and 90 were mechanical)
The GX81 did something similar too.

Its definatly W58 gear box Alloy one with the steel bearing housing. The donor car ???? any ones guess but it def has electronic speedo. Any recomendations as to where to find a wiring diagram for this??
Well I've yet to come across a MkIII with an electronic speedo, even JZA70's with digital dash. Dunno if very late models are different, it's possible I guess.Originally Posted by CrUZida
As for electrical diagrams, you might find what you're looking for in the JZA80 service manual:

Blue / Red = signal
??? thats different again bummer
I think I'll just have to give
Yellow= +ve
Red = -ve
White = Sig
a go and see what happens.
