Default Oil temp sender as a sump plug?

Is it possible to buy a engine oil temp sender that can be doubled as a sump plug, obviously coming with several different grades of thread to fit many makes/models.

Just something I was thinking of due to being lazy and wanting to install an oil temp gauge, preferable to monitor the temperature of sump oil.

yes, but its fairly vunerable to damage from debris. you can buy dipsticks with temp senders built in too

Yep, unless it is mounted to the side of the sump, there is a very real chance it will get damaged or even snapped off by something on the road...

Personally, I would not risk it...

Absolutely. In fact they warn against it. I know Speco Thomas can supply a sump plug with threaded hole (1/8th NPT think).

I drilled a hole in the rear of my sump and brazed a plug there into which I screwed the oil temp sender. That's definitely the best way.

    Cheers,

Im sure it would be reading cooler cambelt1.

What temp should the oil be?
on that note, what temp should the water be?

This has gotten me interested now, i might be taping a thread into my sump tomorrow!

Where should a oil temp measurement be taken from?
The sump full of oil will get hott if the rest of the oil is,
Readings from gauges are more about anomilies than exact values,

I really don't feel like taping more threads in my sump, I may have to look into this sensor dipstick idea. The sump plug on the 4agte is right at the front however I will probably end up pulling the sump off and putting another fitting into it. I could always look at taking it from other places, like from my remote filter relocator, might stay away from the turbo feed line though, although that would be one of the better places seeing as I read my pressure off that.

As for temps, depends on the engine really, most water temps are from 80-100, most oil is a little hotter depending on the cooling, 100-140.

Edit - At work the cars with the thermal oil level sensors take the oil temp readings from the sump, but it is from approximatly the centre of the sump oil level.

just tap into the line you've got running to your oil filter relocation kit, it'll get the temp reading and save you tapping the sump. all you'll need is a T piece fitting to sit somewhere along the line.

yes i was just about to say.. what's wrong with an oil filter + oil cooler relocation kit, that has provisions for oil temp and pressure gauges on it.. the sandwich plate that sits in between engine and oil filter... no hassles, just screw it on and plug it in, make sure it's sealed right and yeh away you go..

that's what i'm doing myself and yea it's a lot less problems though i must say i had a little issue with making sure the couplings fit in nicely

    Hi,

Sump lug is bad 'cos it sits low and can get knocked off and also it will read the tem of the oil which is cooler, as the lower layer of oil - which you'll be measuring - will be cooler than the oil coming out of the engine.

You can buy the kits that fit on the oil filter. Basically it's a small screw-on band that screws into the oil filter thread, and the oil filter then screws into this. On the band is a threaded hole that will allow you to screw in an oil temp or pressure sender. This avoids having to drill any holes and weld up stuff in your block. The extra inch or so extension to your oil filter won't cause any problems, unless it moves the filter to an extent that it won't fit - if room is very limited. In this case, you get a smaller filter.

This is what I'm doing on my 18R-G. I will need to use the Toyota Sports filter, as the normal filter is too large to fit. But, in the end, I will have the oil pressure working, no drilling in the block, and still be able to use a genuine Toyota filter.

That's definitely the best idea by far, and readily available. Here's an example:

Gauges are more for spotting troublwe before that dreaded red light comes on the dash, which usually means the game's over. A rising needle on your oil or water temp gauges, or a drop on your oil pressure gauge is immediate warning and can help you avert a bad situation.

Best placeis after cooler or after filter before oil enters galleries as this is the oil temp motor is 'seeing' as aposed to oil just sitting in sump.
Rule of thumb for oil temp is 20 degrees above water temp.

Ha just read this and feel bad now about having my sender tapped into the sump plug.

I figure its in the centreline of the wheels though which makes it more unlikely to hit something. Also it screws into the sump on a 45deg angle so isn't pointing straight down.

Next time I have the engine out i'll weld another bung on side of sump me thinks.
