Get a jap starter from any 4AF or 20v.
They are 100 x better, lighter, ane smaller than the bosch crap.
They bolt stright in (no mods) and any importer should have dozons of them.
MATT.
my missus's starter motor has packed up, and it seems that bosch do not do a replacement unit, and toyota dont have them listed in spare parts so I cant get genuine or after market!
Short of having the unit rebuilt can anyone suggest what I should do (its definately shagged hitting it doesnt help before anyone asks!)
Does anyone know if there is a compatible starter from say the 4age series maybe the 20v from the ae101?

jap ones are an option, around the $100 mark it would seem, (just called a few places)
the 20v ones definately fit then?
$100 seems a little steep when I owned Toyospares we sold them for $60.00 ring around you will get one cheep.
and 20v's fit.
Maybe some sitting in sheds from RWD swaps.

It's quite possible that the solenoid brushes are shaggedIf these are stuffed the solenoid won't be able throw out the gear to engage the flywheel.
So before you go buy a new starter motor or a second hand that is also close to rooted. Take out the old one and check the brushes. There should be a little metal cap on the back of the starter motor. Take it off and you should be able to see them. They should look clean (and copper in colour). If they look burnt or pitted go to an auto electrcian and buy some new ones. They should only cost about $10
this has been suggested to me also, i havent removed the unit as yet but when I do that will determine what gets done, ie rebush or replacement with a 2nd hand unit
