    Default Manual 1UZ... V160 or R154????

Well im at the point of deciding whether or not to put a manual box behind my S/C 1UZ build up. The reasons for going manual far out way going auto, apart from the cost involved.

My only dilemma will be deciding which box to use, there are a few things to consider and would like some input from people who have either tried or know the technical side behind it all.
By the way it will be a supercharged 1UZ engine in a MK4 supra.

    1. Which of the two gearboxes will have better suited ratio's for the s/c 1uz into the mk4. 5 spd R154 or 6 spd V160
    2. i assume the V160 is alot harder to break, but wot sort of power will each box take before they will most certainly be overstrained.
    3. Obviously the 6 speed is considerably more expensive than the 5, so thats also a consideration if the ratio's arent going to be heaps better with the 6 speed, then maybe i'l take my chances with the 5.
    4. can anyone list the ratios for both 154 and the 160 in each gear so i can compare them for myself.

    Cheers
    Matty

    Gearbox ratios are here.

A supercharged 4 litre engine built to any respectable level will certainly lunch an R154, it's only a matter of time. If the budget stretches to a V160, do it. The fact that it's a bolt-in proposition for your car is a bonus.

I'd vote for the 160, especially if you can find one someplace for a reasonable price. What sort of plans do you have for the 1UZ?

mrshin, its copping a blower, a hefty amount of boost, and the trademark "wildsupra" driving style.

Hmm thats very interesting norbie, the 6th gear ratio is higher than the 5th gear ratio in te 5 speed, as in less of an over drive gear. i would have thought the 6 speed would have a taller over drive gear :/

The worry i have with the 6 speed is that due to the huge amount of torque the 1UZ should be making, that having a 6 speed box is gunna be considerably slower down the strip due to more gear changes and not really needing a lower first gear ratio. As in first is prolly gunna be a waste of time considering its ratio......

Need to go for a drive in a 6 speed i think, get a feel for it.

MRSHIN, i'm aiming for around 500-600hp in the long run, obviously not staight up.

Matty, you are correct on 5th gear being the 1:1 gear on the V160, thus making 6th the proper overdrive. The other consideration you might wanna have is with respect to the diff ratio. Manual TT JZA80's run a 3.2:1 rear, which makes the ratios more usable, particularly first.

Yup, you'll want the tallest diff ratio you can get your hands on with a V160 and that much torque.

If you'd rather stick with a 5-speed you could fork out for a Tremec TKO which JustenGT8 is currently using behind his TT 1UZ. It's an exceptionally strong box but it doesn't come cheap!

    What about what Justen runs?

    Tremec TKO600....

Another option? (what are the pros / cons?)

what about a manualisation of the auto. I have a friend that is looking to do it with the standard auto box the 1uz comes with, i am interested to see how it ends up, but is that an option for you also?

Perhaps, but if depends whether you want 4 gears. It can definetly be made strong enough.

Another option is perhaps *shudders* a Tremec T56, but of course a V160 would be nicer

this was my intended original option, but after much consideration i've decided to scrap the auto idea and go manual. I feel the car will be much better for it once finished.
Disturbed1- yeah the strip is a concern however not my main concern, either way i go it should still be a good strip car, i think i would get bored too quickly if its not manual..

As someone mentioned the diff ratios will also have a lot to do with it, i didnt realise the ttmk4's ran 3.2:1 with the 6 speed, as opposed to a 1jz running a r154 that uses 4.1 as standard.

Having said that, i think i'l go down the 6 speed, not too mention the extra strength in standard form over the 154.

Just doubled the cost though i imagine. Any ideas wot an every day price is for a v160 box?
Next issue will be choosng a clutch and getting a custom bell housing, unless any1 knows of an off the shelf item to suit??

A bare V160 will cost approx $3-4k, then add $1-2k for the flywheel, clutch and related bits (I'm speaking from experience here). You may find it better to get a MkIV 6-speed conversion kit which sometimes sell for $5k or less - even though you can't use all of the parts you may find it more economical.

The V160 doesn't have a separate bellhousing so you'll need an adapter plate for the 1UZ. There are at least 2 or 3 people making these, can't recall any details off the top of my head but Google is your friend.

And when one sees prices for new Tremec TKO600s for like 2k USD....it makes it look good...

Where did Justen get his bellhousing?
