Seems a commmon problem with supras.
i can steer my MA70 with my pinky toe.
id be interested to know how to make it harder too.

I dunno about this one hey...
...if the power steering offers too much assit, can you adjust it at all? restrictors in the pressure lines, different fluid, different pump pulley etc?
i find the jza80 just way too light. wheel moves too easily, has no feedback at all, and doesnt self centre in your hands with any enthusiasm
im tempted to just run the rack without the pump attached, but am also a little loathsome to go back to full manual steering. somewhere in the middle would be nice.
an alternative ive been considering is a 4wd steering rack shock absorber with self centring return springs...
...thoughts?
cheers

one option is incresing caster angle... hows the mkiii set up as far adjustment goes?
im booking mine in for a new wheel alignment at penrith wholesale suspension, and will be asking them to tweak the caster to see if this improves things. apparently its adjustable on the mkiv's but im not exactly sure how
cheers

You could try unplugging the vaccum lines from the P/S pump???
This has been done on My 1G and it made a slight difference without effecting the P/S at Idle. Gave just a little more feel...
Beige.... The new Black!!!
Most steering racks have adjustment at base of were the column mounts. Usually a large nut looking thing on the bottom of rack body. Adjusting this will put more or less weight to the steering.
i thought *a70 steering was power "assisted" steering, not constant like the mk4s?
You could try an electric power steering pump like that found on an SW20. It should offer less pressure than the engine mounted unit on your car.

1974 TA22 Celica (2TG bored and stroked)
Thanks to James Cameron's Terminator films, we know that robots are stronger, faster, tougher and more Austrian than the rest of us.
I hadn't wired up my PPS computer completly and have been driving around with no power steering and i must say it's very good once you get going. I don't think i can go back to power steering at 20km +

Here's a serious response for you Ed....
"Jaycar Digital Pulse Adjuster" kit. Basically it allows you to change the duty cycle of a PWM signal to output a desired duty cycle that suits your wants.
It's fully programmable, basically a conversion table with 60 or so set points in the duty cycle range (0-100%) - meaning you can set the duty cycle output for a given duty cycle input.
This is useful to you how?
I am quite certain that the JZA80 p/steering would have the same "variable" nature as the UZZ30 and other luxury Toyotas, whereby a PWM signal controls the "lightness" of the steering.
wow... i think that might have been useful!![]()

^This man speaketh the truth^
I knew there was something I was thinking of, but couldn't put my finger on it.
Teh UZA80 - Project Century - Remotely p00'd by association
I was thinking to add more castor too.
I guess you could also swap the power steering pump pulley for a bigger one to reduce its' overall output but you may have to adjust a pressure regulator as well or it might just cause surging.
did you read what i posted?Originally Posted by myne
There is no need to go to this extent above - the power assisted steering on a JZA80 has a variable "power" control via a solenoid valve regulating the pressure to the steering rack.
This pressure is controlled by a PWM output to the solenoid, driven by a computer that determines the resultant steering weight considering factors like road speed, engine rpm, etc etc.
using the kit i mentioned above, you can change this PWM output to WHATEVER you like across the whole range of output levels (duty cycle), programming the output you want in 60 or so incremental steps.

Note: All passenger vehicles with powersteering have power assisted steering only. By law, all passenger vehicles, and many trucks, have to have mechanical steering that will work to some extent if the power assist fails. Only heavy earthmoving equipment have full power steering. Its a play on words. How many cars have radial tuned suspension?
