Default How to : polyeurathane engine mounts

I posted this on the old forums so i thought id add it here as things are easier to find on the new forum, it could come in handy for a few people wanting strong engine mounts that stop the engine from torqueing so much and dont send vibrations through the car.

A while ago i asked about options for strengthening engine mounts

I didnt like the idea of just filling the engine mount with poly, so we came up with, buying a nissan patrol poly engine mount from a 4x4 shop and making the best part of the mount all over again whcih isnt a big job, youll never break it and it looks the part.

This will vary from car to car, but this is for a 162 celica with a 3sgte but will work for 3sge , 3sfe id imagine also and could be adapted for any engine mount.

    I removed the front mount.

Punched out the inner ring which the standard rubber mount is connected to.

Got a bit of 3inch tube with 4mm walls.

Linished, or could be sanded if you dont have a linisher until the poly fitted snugly inside tube

Welded the tube into the outer ring of the standard engine mount

Then i cut off as much rubber as i could from the mount which holds the sleeve, then linished the rest until the metal sleeve remained (the sleeve which the main engine mount bolt slides through, this fitted perfectly into the poly mount so i didnt need to drill the hole bigger in the poly.

Then added the patrol mount into the stainless tube, added the sleeve and test fitted and then later installed it.

The pictures give you an idea of the steps involved, its not hard to do and stiffens the engine up alot without adding vibration to anything.

Youll see in this pic that the left component which is the standard mount, theres an outer ring and inner, the rubber of the original mount is moulded to this, so i just got a cold chisel and smashed it out.

The all up cost for this mount was 13 dollars and a few hours of my time.

i dont know how to modify them to make the pics come up but you get the picture from those....

Good howto mate, I've been keen to try and make a pair of solid mounts myself some time for ages now
For 13 bucks I reckon I can afford it too haha

What model patrol did the original poly mounts come from?

I'd rep you but I've gotta spread some around first

I also made some / had some made up.

I ended up getting a length of 50x3.5mm flat bar from the local steel mart, cutting the bar at lengths of 50mm to form a 50x50 square 3.5mm thick.

I then drilled a hole in the middle of the square and welded a bolt through the plate...
This formed my mounting plate complete with thread.

I then took my 4 pates went down to a bloke who deals with urethane and said..... can you bond me up some urethane between the 2 plates to form a mount.

In all the two mounts cost me $50 and where made to my desired hardness and size..

Stronger and cheaper than std mounts!

BeRad, how did you find the right size mounts?
What are the part numbers for the ones from the Patrol?

    Great howto.

yeah, this is while i was a stupid idiot that actually trusted other people to do honest work.

got burned badly by the fuckwit that installed that, and have done all my own work since, for stuff that i cant do, for whatever reason, ive got people i can trust.

DIY isnt just the best way, it should be the only way.

and when i started, i had no mechanical, electrical or otherwise automotive knowledge, im a god damn ceiling fixer.

I'm not 100% sure of what you've done here.

The red urethane part is the Patrol mount?
You've made the outside smaller so it fits inside the 3" tube?
& then you've welded that into the inside of the standard mount which you've removed the original rubber?

Has it increased the vibration at all?
The reason I'm asking is that the front & rear engine mounts on my 2C-T (turbo diesel), which is mounted identically to a 3S in a Celica/Camry/whatever else Toyota jammed this motor into, have flogged out, meaning my exhaust (which is on the back of the motor) hits against the crossmember under the firewall (it only clears by about 10-15mm normally).

I think the easiest way would be to get a spare mount, bash the inner ring out that the rubber is moulded to, get a piece of tube that can slip inside the outer ring of the original ring, that has a decent wall thickness i used 3mm, then linish or grind or cut or whatever you would like to use to get the inner tube out where the mount bolt slips through the rubber mount. then take the new piece of tube that welds into the existing outer ring and take the 19mm or so sleeve to a 4x4 shop and find a poly mount that suits your application.

yep ive used the patrol mount, i had the part number somewhere but its been a while and has since disapeared, the patrol mount fitted perfect into the 3inch stainless tube with a little persuasion with a hammer, i then got a piece of stainless tube but u can use whatever i just had the stainless liein around, and then i removed the patrol mount and welded the stainless tube into the original outer ring which once had an inner sleeve where the rubber was moulded to, you just belt the inner ring out. moulded to the rubber is also the 19mm tube in the centre which the mount bolt slips through, and bolts to the part of the mount that bolts to the x memeber, once welded i taped the patrol poly back into the mount and then slipped the 19mm tube through the middle, which fitted perfect but the poly may need drilling out if the inner sleeve is larger than the 162 mount.

No the vibration didnt increase at all, with you having a diesel and alot more vibration it possibly will but i dont think so, the mount is extremely firm but still didnt increase vibration through the mount i made.

    You know the rules's,

If you want it done properly, do it yourself.

After spending far too much on my head at the engine reconditioners, and it kept throwing shims out ( on a 20V, under bucket shims too) I spent the time, instead of the money, and re-did all the valves clearances myself.
