Mazda 626 wont start

Hey guys,

I know this isnt a mazda forum, but i need some general car advice..

Ive got my brother in laws Mazda 626 sitting out on my front yard, and im about sick of it being there.

Problem is to get it there, we had to get it towed from the city at a cost of about $140...

So id like to get it running so he can drive it where ever the hell he likes that isnt infront of my house......!

Basically the head has blown, and we replaced the gasket, but beleive its something more major then that as the car still boils water. (not what im trying to fix here )Other then that the car was still running, and driving fine.. Until....

The clutch reservoir had been leaking, just a bit, then one day it died completely..

He tried to drive it home, with no clutch, which is always fin, managed to get out of a car park, down the street a little ways, then had to stop at lights.

We havent had the car started since.

Basically it will still turn over, with the engine getting to about 1500rpm on turn over, but doesnt start.

Obviously, we cant try and roll start it, as i havent had a chance to properly bleed the new clutch slave yet.

The negative battery terminal gets extremely hot, im talking you could boil your kettle on it if you liked.. But still no fire.

Im about out of ideas that i can try by myself, i havent checked spark yet, as i need help for that, but wondering what else you guys think it could be...

The negative wire will burn up with constant cranking of the starter as it draws lots of power.

Did you plug in all the sensors again when you put the head back on , tps, afm or map whichever it uses

Crank the motor and pull a plug out and see if the plug is wet with fuel, are the plugs fouled this could stop it from firing.

What ignition does it use dizzy or cas, did you put the dizzy back in the right way on the cam if you took it out.

The car was working fine for about a week. with no issues...

I called the RAA out today, and got them to look over it.

They basically confirmed what i thought about it being a starter motor fault.

All the cranking while the car was in gear to get it home must have killed the solenoid.

He is going to get the car to a mechanics and have them replace the head and the starter while its there..

Why are you replacing the starter? if it still turns the motor over fine?

so it ran for a week after replacing the head?, if it didnt it could have been something as simple as cam timing.

Yer ran fine for a week.

Stil turns over, but you could burn yourself on the negative terminal. warms up on the battery enough that you can see the plastic melt, and by the reaction of the RAA guy today when he touched it, even more on the starter itself.

He told me it was probably a problem with the starter, as theres a massive power draw when you try and turn the car over, and its not turning over fast enough.

Even with either the jump start pack, or the actual jumper leads out the back of the Van.

The guys i had were sub contractors though, and were a little bit short in their attitude. Seemed more keen on advertising where they worked instead of a way to solve the problem.

What type of 626, ie model year and motor, as all have slight differences. Sounds like starter has gone high resistance which will cause excessive heat and power draw. Basically starter draws so much current there is insufficient to fire the coil, hence no start, usually solved with a changeover or replacement starter, but if it is an older points style motor excessive cranking and heat can cause the points to close, which again stops motor from starting and also causes starter to overheat.

Its a 1989, 2.2i F2 Engine.

not 100% sure of the model.

So no points, it would be completely electronic i think.
