celica gearbox? 3sge gen 3

hi, i am looking to change the gearbox in my st184 celica. it currently has a 3sge gen 3 in it. ive been given conflicting advice so im hoping someone out there can clarify before i go ahead.

problem at the moment is that ratios are too long with the stock s54 gear box (lacking acceleration).
i have been told that the the st202 box from the ss-III (with LSD) has a better final drive but i cant get a hold of one here.

Because of that i am pursuing a gearbox from a camry. can anyone confirm that it will fit. and secondly is the final drive different? will this address the problem at hand?

If anyone has info or a st202 box with LSD please let me know.

What speeds are you getting out of the gears, this may proove or disproove a few things...

Everything from the camry and fwd/awd celicas mr2s seems to fit together in all combos, ive personally used a sv21 box on a gen 2 3sgte, people use v6 camry boxs if they can get hold of them, st205 boxs fit st185s etc, so chances are very high that they'll bolt together ill let someone whos a celica nut confirm this though.

I found when i bolted the sv21 camry box to my 3sgte that the gears were longer again. final drive was taller also.

Have you just done the conversion or bought the car? maybe your expecting to much from the gen 3?

thanks for the reply i did the conversion a while back but never got around to changing the gearbox until now since the synchros are going. ive since changed the ecu extractors etc and getting around 110kw at the front wheels. first gear goes to 60km, 2nd goes to 100kmh, third around 140 (i think) and 4 goes to 202kmh. im mainly after better acceleration in 2nd.

How do you know it gets to 202

forgive my ignorance but what year is the sv21? just need to make sure i dont get the same box or else i will be no better off.

sorry to hijack, I'm probably not much help on the gearboxes but I'm trying to chase down a 3rd Gen 3S-GE as well. don't really give a toss about gear ratios or final drives and stuff, just need an ST202 5-sp front cut... chitown383 can you tell me where you got yours from and if you know of anyone selling one?

yeah sorry Huy, should have mentioned earlier that I've tried just about all of them near me (over the QLD border down to the central coast) and it seems they're not easy to come across.

S53's have much sportier ratios (these were behind st162's with 3sge's in them).

1st gets to 40 - 50ish, 2nd gets around 80, 3rd about 120

The problem you'll have with these is the starter position, being under the exhaust manifold it probably won't fit due to the oil cooler.. there is rumor you can drill out the outer side of the gearbox to hold the starter there but I haven't tried it first hand yet - I have a spare bellhousing in my garage which a friend and I are going to try and use as a template to do this someday

The other option would be removing the oil cooler which would mean replacing the water bypass pipe with something from an earlier 3sge or 3sfe.. but even then I'm not sure if the starter fits under the exhaust headers on gen 3's

thanks for all the help everyone. pretty much i just want something simple that i can just put straight in. i had a look at the megaboost link posted by da_horse its says that the 5sfe s54 has a final drive of 4.1? can nyone confirm this. better yet can anyone confrim that a gearbox from a 95 camry (sxv10) will fit my car and wether this will give me the acceleartion im after.

What's the gearbox code from the 95 camry? If it's the one that went behind the M series v6, then yes it will bolt up to an S series motor.. if it's the one I'm thinking of it is the LSD box?

m series came with the e153. the 5s-fe camry's came with s54.
from what ive seen, none of the camry box's were ever LSD. though the MR2 version of the E153 had some which were LSD.
