mate, that is one of the most used cars on these forums there is probly roughly 30million threads on conversions , even walk throughs have a search.
the 3sgte bolts in, the 3sge bolts in, theres an arseload of info at your finger tips.
Good luck.
hey,
my sisters car spun a big end bearing 3sfe, shes getting a new car and said i could have it if i want to fix it, at first i was just going to repair that motor, but now im thinking of putting in a jap 3SGE or 3SGTE? or a newer celica engine, i just dont know much about fwd toyotas, it needs 1to2 syncos and a clutch aswell so i was just thinking of getting a half cut of some sort and banging it in, but how hard would it acually be? and do gt4 half cuts come with all the 4wd gear usually? i was thinking 2wd gt4 conversion, whats involved in mounting etc, starter location, gearboxes, linkages, and also computers. if i were to go to a 3sge would the std 3sfe computer work?

cool thanks, yeah i searched, still havent found much, as long as they bolt in i can do the rest thanks.
Yeah, covered about 10 thousand times.
Although if you want to be different I have a 3.6 Commodore V6 here. Install that. Im sure it'd fit in easily. It would also give you great chassis balance..
..
or not...
I think 3SGE would be your best option.
HZJ75, RS41, JZZ30
no thanks lol.
try searching the old forums as well,
depending what your after is what it comes down to,
if your want a reliable car, with a bit of go,
2nd Gen 3sge is the best option,
if you want sum more power, and a turbo, also more hassles,
a 1,2 gen 3sgte would be the best way to go.
if you really dont want to spend much money at all,
1st gen 3sge and bolt it in.
What is autosalon? Sounds kinda homo.

5sfe is a conversion I've recently heard of that is apparently pretty straight forward into an ST spec 162. I'm working on getting better details but you could hit up Jeremy (aka alltracman78) over on celicatech.com
From what I've heard there is very little that needs changing apart from the engine and ecu but I've not confirmed that yet.
Would be an appealing swap if true as the 5sfe makes about as much power and more torque than the 3sge of the 4th gen era. They're also cheap as chips and probably more likely to have fewer kms.
check it out.

that's very flattering but no thanks.Originally Posted by H1TMAN

184s run the 5sfe or 5sge depending on model specific
aw11s run the gen 1 (or 2 i think) 3sge unless you get the supercharged version
gt4s run the turbo'd versions (3sgte)
and i believe the 204s run the gen 3 3sge
celicas after that run crazy engines that will not bolt in (zzfe or something, dunno off the top of my head)
it really depends on what you can find/whats available..
your looking at a gen 2 or gen 3 3s-ge, or if you can/want, the turbo version.
if you're going n/a power, id say gen 2 cos itll be easier to find. search the for sale thread in the engines section..
hope this helps mate, the 162 is a mad little car

184s have 5sfe, there's no such engine as a 5sge (not from the production line at least..)Originally Posted by 74sLeeka
aw11's have 4age or 4agze in them, you're thinking of sw20's which have gen 2's
204's have 5sfe's, st202's have gen 3's
3sge won't work with a 3sfe computer
If you're looking for a bit of fun from the car, put a 3sgte in it.. it's easy done, but you will really want to upgrade the brakes, which will mean a rear disc setup from an SX (hubs will need to be replaced as well), front brake upgrade will certainly be necessary and require hubs to be replaced
If you just want the car as cheap car to get around in put another cheap 3sfe in it from a wrecker

hmmm, I wish the ST204's came with a Gen3 3S-GE, and thus my search for this engine to replace my old-and-nearly-busted Gen1 would be a lot easier.![]()
Funny, that sounds just like the car my brother just bought (for $200).Originally Posted by TE72_1800T
The big picture part is that you can't (easily) use the 4WD gearbox, and you wouldn't want to due to almost double the weight of the 2WD one, so a GT4 half cut wouldn't really help your synchro issues.Originally Posted by TE72_1800T
If you can lock up the viscous coupling (either by welding it up, or fabricating a piece to replace it) then you can use the 4WD box in 2WD but the superflous weight will still be there.
But yeah, half cut means you get almost everything else you would need for the conversion (turbo, cooler, wiring, computer, etc) although with the 2nd gen 3SGTE (ST185) there's a chance you'd need to rebuild the half cut engine if you wanted it "nice".
Any different engine means different computer - basics 101 of engine conversions. It *might* work, but it will be a compromise no one really makes when swapping engines.Originally Posted by TE72_1800T
FWIW my brother's car will be getting a 1st gen 3SGE out of the SX version of the ST162, but that's only because I already have one (with computer/wiring)... Otherwise I'd be recommending he gets a newer 5S-FE in favour of a 3S-GTE (he's likely to kill himself) or even a newer 3S-GE (cost).
