Default V band clamp leaking on exhaust

Has anyone had a V band clamp leaking problem.

Mine seems to have developed a small leak, apart from retightening it is there a recommended sealant, sealer that can be used?

I did it up pretty tight when i set it up, is it something that needs to be retightened every so often? I did not want to go to gung ho and break it by overtightening it.

    Cheers

When you torque up a V band clamp, tigten up the nut then give the clamp a tap with a hammer the whole way around the clamp. This will make ture the clamp is seated properly. Then re torque and you should be done. Also, is the nut a locking type?

from experienc ive found that most v bands leak to some degree.
if they are thick machined items they wont leak much but the thin strap style ones have a bad habit of leaking and you have to tighten them every 5000ks
if your exhaust runs a flex they wont be to bad but if not they seem to work the bands loose by flexing the sides of them, in short run a flex if you dont already have 1.
if you have a wastgate pipe running into the dump make sure it has a flex on it as the expansion and contraction between the two will work a v band loose also.

    I agree with that!
In my experience also ... all the v band clamps i have used have leaked alittle. The v band clamp was designed for quick and easy removal /assembly of components. It is widely used in racing where a slight leak from the exhaust isnt of major concern or noticed.

All i can suggest to you is to make sure your seating surfaces are true. Depending on the type you can check them with a flat file.

    I must be lucky.

My Scorp has a factory sigma turbo setup on it. There is a v band clamp between the turbo and dump pipe, and the manifold and wastegate. No flexible joints anywhere.

I put it all together with Loctite high temp copper silicon sealant and no leaks from the clamps. It's been like it for 6 months/17000k's.
