Default How to remove car door lock - lost keys.

Hey lost my car keys. I have contacts to a locksmith and am told that if I remove the car door lock there should be a code on it that he can look up in a database and make a new key from.

So how do I remove the lock? I understand how to remove the door trim and such, but is there any tricks I might need to know in pulling the lock out?

The car is a ST162 Celica.

    Many thanks.

Pull the door trim off and unclip the nylon clip which holds the locking rod in place and remove it from the lock, then use a 10mm socket or spanner to undo the bolt retaining the lock into the door handle

It's optional to pull the whole handle out, certainly not necessary just to get the locks out though.. I've done it with them in before and it's a lot quicker and easier than taking the handles out to do it.

The lock code is usually on the passenger side lock by the way.

Another option is to try a few other toyota keys - most old toyotas can be opened/started by glaring at them, let alone anything resembling a key.

locksmiths can supply new barrels set for a specific key (for doors) if they know what their doing - my RA40 had the mismatching barrels replaced when it was being repainted.

Otherwise remove barrel from a door or the steering column, take to a locksmith and get them to make new key(s) to suit.

Or buy a new ign barrell and door lock set from a wrecker.
The hardest bit with removving the doorlocks is if you aren;t confident with those nylon clips. Flat blade screwdriver prises them off.

Ign barrell should come out with key to ACC and press that little button up the back of it and pull.

Turns out the key code was on the drivers side lock and the locksmith said 9 out of 10 times it will be on the driver side, for anyone who may read this looking for info on getting their code.
