I have fitted a cheapo oil catch can to my 1GGTE. Only after about 2 days driving locally (about 3hrs driving) the catch can is full! Is this normal?? The car gets a bit of a workout during those 3 hrs though. Engine is equipped with twin td04-9b turbos too.

engine has done approx 80'000k's. Im just unsure if its normal to be getting that much oil venting?

nah shouldnt go threw that much, worse case do a cylinder leakage test.

not a mechanic but sounds like valve stem seals to me.... i think Eldaro has similar issues with oil usage and he heavily suspects valve stem seals on his 7MGTE.

did you have the engine rebuilt that long ago or is that what the seller told you, if its an import i seriously doubt its that fresh.Originally Posted by Pube
that much oil is not a good sign (im guessing el cheapo 1L type) and something is amiss.
do a leakdown test to check if its a blowby problem and then go hunting if its not that.
i have had motors that were sitting for some time do this and after a week they came good ( still dont know what caused it exactly ) so maybe keep driving for a couple of days and see how it goes.

if there's no mesh filter to prevent oil droplets heading straight to the can, it will fill up quckly (i have this issue with my 18rte).
how have you hooked up the catch can?
If you've disconnected the PCV valve that scavanges oil fumes to the plenum, what size pipes are you running to the catch can?
The engine is from a GX81 front cut that had under 80'000k's on the odometer. After dyno day and the drags I will pull it apart and do a compression test. I have had the engine running for a bit now in the old car as well, probably done about 5000k's.
The catch can is setup in place of the factory system. The standard setup ran a single hose from a rocker cover to the T junction of the intake before the turbos. I dont think 1G's have a PCV?
One thing I have just thought of though is that im using 1GGE cam covers. The cam covers didnt have any breather so I got a fitting welded to the same side cover as the standard 1GGTE cover had it on. However I didnt put a baffle inside like the stock cover has. Could this be an issue?

im gunna say normal head oil slosh is getting into the hose and going all the way.
id assume the baffle would stop oil pouring out and only let oil fumes pass through ... which your can then filters etc etc.

I have found an article on the net http://peugeotforum.dk/images/Oilbre...er_systems.pdf .It talks about the importance of baffles and the types of baffles used to slow the oil down in the oil mist so the oil will drop with gravity. From abad memory I think the 1GGE covers had a baffle in there somewhere but it only ran parallel to the top of the cover and I cant even remember if it covered the breather outlet. Also I could put a restrictor on the line going back into the intake to reduce the suction on the cam cover breather/catch can.

Another thing to add the the baffle issue. I checked out a standard 1GGTE cam cover. The standard cover has the large raised section at the back, where the oil cap is. In this section there are 2 separate baffles which would make it very difficult for pure oil to flow. Im thinking these baffles would certainly slow the oil mist down quite considerably where garvity would separate oil from the gas. looks like I will have to pull apart thalf my engine again. Damn water to air intercooler![]()

just try a top mount out .. as apposed to off the sides.
use a right angle sppedflow fitting etc off the top .... same gravity theory.

The catch/overflow/puke can is to prevent oil from an engine failure getting on the track, with an open to the atmosphere vented crankcase. They are also used being in closed systems to coverup problems with tired and/or inadequately plumbed engines - too much blowby, sludged up head drains & oil separator things, or in long high G turns.
If it hasn't been blasting smoke & eating a liter per 3 hours previously, then it'something you've done. Plumb it right & fix what you've messed up.
