Default 1JZ belt tensioner/idler pulley bearing

Just had the bearing collapse, and jamb solid, never seen so much instant smoke come out of my bonnet vents. Scared the crap out of me! thought I was on fire! then belt snapped, power steer went, sort of realised what happened.breath deep, wait for heart to slow down.

    Problem(s)
1), is the bearing/idler replaceable on it's own or is it only replaceable with the belt tensioner?
    2) if it is removeable from tensioner, anything weird about getting it off? Not reversed threads or anything to further destroy my day?don't want to lean on the centre bolt, then find out it turns the other way.

I have heard of this before. I need to replace the one on the 1J as well. I heard that a ford windsor is almost a direct replacement. I think there was a few MM difference but it didnt matter at all. Plus it was about $25 Vs $200. Dont quote me on this but its what Ive heard.

    I need this info too.

I'm assuming you mean the drive belt tensioner? I'd be interested to know too. I remember some of the soarer guys replacing the whole assembly, not to say that you can't just replace the bearing tho.

Sorry no more help from me then that.

There are two different types of belt tensioner.

The first type has a metal pulley and the bearing IS replacable

The second type has a plastic pulley and the bearing in not replaceable.

So if you have the metal type you will be ok!

i just had this prob a week ago ... and heck it the toyota service centre quote me RM580 for the whole assembly... thats around AUS250.... wat the heck .. and at the junk yard they quote me RM250 which is around AUS110....

as i dont ever belive that bearings is non-changeble because if it can be installed in there MUST be a way to remove it ... so i remove the whole thing and find out that the bearing is just using the normal 6203 bearing (NTN brand).... which cost me RM10 which is less than 5 bucks your local currency.... and i got my self SKF brand bearing...i have heard lots of horror stories about how xpensive it can be.....but it can be solve at d price of peanuts..

    thanks for speedy replies,
The one that collapsed had the metal pulley, anyone got local part number or alternative?SKF or NTN numbers? thanks for pointer.
any tricks required to get it off?
I have put on a temporary replacement with a plastic pulley(ebay $15, few months back, looked like something to loose in the garage till required, got it right for once) Real QUIET, now I know what the irritating rattle was.
New belt was $32, Ryco 1875( shorter,I don't have air on it yet)

All my keywords are duds, anyone for the magic word that brings up the real good thread???

sit the pulley in open vice jaws and tap the bearing out with a large socket. once its out take it to your local bearing guys and theyll sell you a replacement.

otherwise get the inside diam, outside diam and the thickess and thye will match it

I had the black plastic one on my engine, ended up using the ford windsor V8 $25 from repco, it is a metal pulley, couple mm bigger than the plastic one, doesn't foul on anything, the bearing is replacable/removable. i just tapped the bearing in to get the belt to sit right in the middle, worked a treat.

I also needed the shorter belt without Aircon. Thanks Splatt!

Another simple one to do, what i did when i had my jzx83.

get a VS Commodore Iginition Pully, And Gen3 Water Pump Belt.

Fits good, and i never had another probem from it.
And it only cost $100 or so to do
