Red face LSD or No LSD... What is best in AW11?

    Hey All...

Well... I just have found out that my 1/2 cut Blacktop 20v has come with a LSD gearbox... C56-04c.

Now, I'm contemplating on going through the trouble of re-useing my MR2 Gearbox (C52 with No LSD) or if I should use the BT 20V gearbox (C56-04c) which has an LSD.

I'm a big fan of LSD, as I used to drive a high power Supra, which has proven that an LSD is absolutely critical to a successfull launch with the Supra... but the MR2 is a car that handles, and is light.

Classical example, of why I'm thinking this way, is the Lotus Elise which is also a light midship supercar, with about 200Hp, shortwheel base, and it does not have an LSD! Hence, my thoughts on LSD or No LSD, as I do not want to sacrifice the handling of the MR2.

So... my question is... To those that did the gearbox swap with LSD, what are the advantages, and was there an improvement in handling, or the oposite? Is it worth the hassle, appart from the better gear ratios that the 20V Gearbox gives?

    Thanks in advanced...

    MIKE.

No personal experience here but I'd say the LSD unit is heavier. But the benefit would be not having inside spinners if you try to put the power down mid-corner.

Oh, and 2 wheel skids .

i think the stock C56 LSD would be a good idea in an AW11
mod the shifter linkage to work in the AW11 and fit the C56
has better ratios and wil be less kays too

you dont need the lsd with the amount of torque the 20v makes but its never a bad thing if you have the time and funds convert the c56 to rwd and enjoy doing some doughnuts

the ratios in the c52 are pretty good for the 20v

ive never driven an na with limo only the sc, from having had both ive alwasy felt having the limo in the na would just make it that bit more controllable at the limit. especially in the wet.

the stock C56 one isnt very aggressive, so i think it would compliment it nicely.
infact the more i think about it, the more i think itll be a good move.

i dun really think so there is heaps of traction with the mid engine ive had no dramas if anything its probably easier to control as it will start to spin the inside wheel instead of getting sideways but each to their own its not a bad thing having the lsd with the s/c definatley better with the n.a not really needed just my 2c

just a point it will be easier using the stock mr2 box but its not that hard to convert the c56

Is the C56 LSD, helical, clutch or viscous?

This comes from no personal experience but I reckon an LSD would be a good thing, especially if it is not to aggressive...a tight one I guess could cause some oversteer. Only thing is in the wet it might be a bit scary when it does let go, especially around round abouts etc

ive always felt the limo in the SC makes it more controllable in the wet.. when it does let go you can hold it sideways much eaiser then the na with the open centre that when it lets go it really lets go.

that said ive never driven an na with a limo but ive always felt it would make a nice improvment.

trd still supply a limo centre for it. not obnoxiously expensive either from memory.

    helical
and a loose one. so wont lock up all the time, but will when you start getting wheelspin.
it wont prevent a bit of slip, so imho perfect for an AW11, where an aggressive clutchpack type can make them a handfull!!

Definitely go for it Mike...I reckon it's worth the effort

My thinking in the wet was that with an LSD, when it lets go you go from having 2 rear wheels with traction to no rear wheels with traction so very little grip but the limit of traction will be higher compared to a single spinner but the LSD makes it smoother in the sense of not doing a big tank slapper.

The AW11 of Rex has LSD and it is a truly awesome driving experience. It has an interesting characteristic which can only really be described as oversteer squat.

If you enter a corner at pace and accelerate hard right on the apex the rear squats and rockets out of the corner at a considerably tighter cornering radius.

Its not an opposite lock oversteer, Its as if the car turns tighter under power with the same amount of steering angle.

Under track its can be a bit of a handfull, but it is very rewarding to smooth it all out. Rex is sure an LSD is partly responsible for some of the zero-counter slides possible around mallala's wider turns. Very, very entertaining to drive.

Now He needs LSD for the N/A one...
