1980RIP NATHAN BRETT DEAN2007,
sorry i did a search but couldnt find what i was after im jsut after any markings on the box that can identify it not specs or anything , but yeh if theres no markings then i ahve no chance as if i opened it i wouldnt know the difference anyway , strange how toyota wouldnt mark it with any part numbers i ahvent seen the box yet so dont know if theres any markings. oh well guess its jsut a risk il have to take ,
hey yeh i know they are W series well thats what im after , ive been told of a few different w series supra boxes a steel case , an alloy case and an alloy case with steel carrier plate, and the hilux and celica are also w series yet not the ratio's i want they may be strong enough ( 1uzfe) but not ideal ratio's.
The way to tell is by the ratios.......... Mark the output shaft and turn the the imput shaft then count the amount of turns.
You will beable to work it out from there ! ........ Its not that hard to do![]()

If you're asking how to distinguish a W58 from a W55/6/7/9, there is no way to do it externally - they all look exactly the same from the outside. Yes you can determine the ratio from rotating the shafts, so for example if you put it in 5th gear, rotate the output shaft 10 times and count 7.8 revolutions on the input shaft that would indicate a W58 (0.783:1 5th gear) or if you count 8.6 revolutions it would probably be a W57 (0.861:1 5th gear).
Also note early W5x boxes have an alloy sandwich plate, later ones (from late 80's) have a steel sandwich plate which makes the box a lot stronger

Is that the one just posted up on Yota Scene? Very good looking work if it is, I suggest you start a project thread here too so we can all see the progress.

thanks for that , helps a lot are they worth much im lead to believe it was rebuilt and has not been in a car since as it is a mates he had no use for it anymore cause hes doing a new project.
The W50 is the 'Celica steelcase' box, they're not bad but I wouldn't put any serious power through one. they sell for $50-$150 privately and shops charge as much as $750 for a rebuilt one.
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....
ive come across brand new w58 boxs on ebay for around $800 they are chinese apparently which makes me sceptical cause $800 is a lot to throw down the drain , would anyone recomend these and how much roughly would a rebuilt w58 cost ?
i'm also in the early stages of a 1uz-fe build (ie. buying stuff) and was wondering whether these chinese W58's are much chop... they apparently come with a 12month / 20,000 km warranty, but whether that applies to being bolted to a v8 is another question. Anybody had any experience with these chinese reproductions?
