Default Setting Timing on AW11 4age.Really need help.PICS

Hi everyone, well this is doing my head in! i have an aw11 4age and i'm using a ae82 distributor. I'm trying to set the timing up after having the dissy out and a new belt put on.

I'm pretty sure the belt is on correct.all marks line up fine with the cam's and on the crank gear behind the crank pulley. The engine is definately at TDC when it's all alligned.

I have been using this guide : http://www.toymods.net/TechDocs/4age...stem/ig_11.jpg

I think the issue is that i'm using an ae82 distributor.. And since i am using a ae82 distributor i'm not sure what markings to go off. I have definately found top dead centre and it happens to line up perfectly with the needle indicator sticking out of the belt cover. Though on the ae82 4age it says TDC has to line up with the "0" on the timing scale.

Here is a pic of my cam gears and crank at TDC:

Note: the other marking near the 0 scale in that pic, i put on there.. (idea i had)
Here is the dissy i'm using. I'm pretty sure this is how it's meant to be alligned:

Can someone please tell me how to set this up properly.

PS: i have had the car running and driving (yesterday) but the timing was obviously out. my idle was very high and it didn't rev properly. It was also pinging a bit. (timing advanced?)

that all looks right, when the two dimples on the dizzy are lined up what i do is mark a spot on the rotor button and then on the housing to make it easier to make sure its properly lined up once its in.

then you will need to set the timing with a timing light. id suspect you simply havent set the timing correct using a light once the dizzy is in the rihgt spot.. remember to short out T1E1 when your setting the timing.

Hi toof, i have shorted the terminals T/E1. If it all looks right then what i'm not sure on is; what mark on the crank should line up with the "10" on the timing scale? the TDC mark?(which is the mark that alligns with the needle indicator at TDC). Using my timing light i cant get that marking anywhere near the "10" on the scale..

When i have it running "ok" the timing mark is way over near the alternator. so massively advanced.

Also which dimbles in the pic below are meant to line up? the red line or blue line?

when inserting the dist, the inner cog (the rotor arm doobie) will turn as you push it in. make sure the rotor stays pointed at the #1 spark position (it'll be pointing down towards the bottom of the side fan there abouts). so you need to keep the rotor in position and allow the whole dist to turn when inserting.
if it moves as you insert the dist you will end up not being able to adjust the timing correctly as it'll be too far advanced or retarded.

    hope that makes sense dude.

    the red lines up,

also that lower timing cover you have on there doesent look like an mr2 one.. mr2's dont set the timing aginst the cover. they set it against the pin onto the two timing marks on the pulley.. there should be one for TDC and another just before it for 10deg advance.

so dont try and line it up agianst the lower timing cover marks as if you have an aw11 pulley then the marks i nthe pulley are in the wrong spot to line up aisbnt the timing cover.

one trick which i use as my crank pulley hasnt got timing marks cut in it.

using a white texta mark the TDC mark on the inlet cam sprocket and the backing plate.

then i time the engine off that. it should be advanced one half tooth.

Hey toof, thanks for that clarification. +rep.

I do have two extra marks cut out on my pulley. they are both to the right of the TDC marking.

Do i set my timing against one of these marks? if so, what are the values of these marks?

    thanks alot

Mmm. My Toyota 4AG repair manual shows an AW setup like yours (p IG26, should be able to download it somewhere), the mark your on is 0deg, second mark is 10deg, third mark is (AFAIK) 15deg. Advanced. Hope that helps.

    cheers

i see the timing pointer there just like a aw11 one. and there are 3 marks on a crank pulley, not 2.
TDC, 10 degrees base timing and 14-16 (depending on auto or manual) like wraith mentions.

everything in the last picture posted looks exactly where it should be, and as i mentioned just watching the rotor's position when inserting it i find far more easier to get right than lineing up them silly marks.

dunno if this link works, i wont on my comp.

Pull the dizzy cap off and line up the rotor button with the first cylinder then put it in and move it forward 10deg.

A little to late, but here's a nice reference for aw11 timing.
