    Default How to clean 3SGE ISCV - Idle Speed Control Valve/Actuator (Pics incl.)

    I've been having idling troubles with an ST162 celica running a 3SGE. I was told one thing to try was to clean the ISCV (Idle Speed Control Valve). I was told it was an electrical device but it seems that in my 3SGE its controlled by coolant temp as I read on another forum?

    The water pipes running to the ISCV actualy control the rpm.
    Check out the same system on the 4age and other toyotas of the period.
    As the water warms, the wax in teh valve softens, allowing teha ctuator to block the breather and lower rpm. Theres also an idle screw to fine tune the fully warmed idle setting.

    Here a couple of pictures of the ISCV from my 3SGE that I have pulled out;

    There appears to be a large spring (valve) inside that housing that attaches to the throttle body. What I'm curious is how do I clean this type of ISCV as opposed to the electrical type shown in this thread;

    Since runs coolant through it then use a substance that breaks down calcium deposits. I did use vinegar once a long time ago, but not on a part like this. I don't think that vinegar would break down the wax or anything so it should be ok. What is it doing to make you think it needs cleaning?
    And yes, this is a mechanical idle speed device. Cold water makes the wax open a valve to let more air past the throttle, and when the water is warm it closes up.
    Mine wasn't closing properly and started to cause my car to overheat because it kept the revs really high. I ditched it and got another one from a wrecker.

    It has a really erratic idle. Idles fine in the morning but after driving it for a bit its all over the place. 500rpm, 2000rpm, 1200rpm. Fluctuates with driving. Another toymods member suggested I clean the ISCV in order to hopefully solve my problem so here I am

    Inside that ISCV it looks like theres an outer chamber and an inner chamber with a spring around it (though you cant see much). Does the water run through the inner chamber or the outer because the outer chamber looks like it has slight oil deposit in it so I figured thats where the air was travelling, and the water travelling through the inside chamber thats surrounded by the spring. Is that correct?

    By two chambers I mean like a cylinder that runs along inside the cylinder housing.

    i went out and bought a can of that throttle body cleaner(blue can from repco) and used an old rag seemed to do the job quite well.

    The gasket for the ISCV broke when I took it off and I desperately need the car for Sunday arvo. Do you think It could run well with silicon gasket maker instead of another gasket?

    I guess that does sound similar to what mine was doing.
    You can drive without part connected if you want (just block off the fat air hose at both ends-it will idle badly and slowly when it's cold and a little fast when it's warm), but maybe try cleaning it with that throttle body cleaner first. Remember to flush it well cos you don't want chemicals flowing though you coolant system or being sucked into the engine. Try soaking it in a small tub for a couple of hours.
    If nothing works then grab another one from a wreck.
    I drove without it connected for two weeks but on cold mornings it was hard to start.

    Good luck.

    Yeh its all cleaned with WD40 and put back in.
    The idle has been holding at 800rpm in drive, then you put it in neutral and it goes to 1400rpm, weird.

    Its a long shot but your ECU may have 'learned' some bad behaviour. Pull the main engine fuse for 30 seconds and see what that does. I take it that it is not throwing any CEL codes?

    Also, if you want to set your idle speed you need to put a jumper between Te1 and e1, as well as block off hose #1 before adjusting the idle speed screw. Don't ask me why, the Haynes manual says to do it.
    Obviously the engine must be warm.

    Ive never had to deal with CEL codes before. They are an audible beep noise right? And the beep pattern matches a specific error code which will tell me whats wrong with the car. Ie. Beep for 5 seconds then stop means car is on fire kind of thing?

    Put a short wire between the two 'pin-outs' as Mikie 121 has said above, turn the ket to ON and read the flashes (if any). Tell us what you get.
