Hi folks, Im just about to build a new shed and have decided to get a hoist. The hoist Im looking at is this.A mate of mine has one and Its pretty good.

so my question is how much room do you think I need above the hoist and also work area around it.
The hoist posts are 1800 high.
So what do people think. Would I have enough room around the hoist in a 4000 wide bay. How low could the shed be ?

nostalgia is not what it used to be:
Try and get the biggest shed you possibly can - while you can build a tiny little bay that's just wide enough to fit a hoist in and it'll work, if you've ever worked in a tiny workshop, it really sucks! It's good to allow enough height to be able to put on a 4WD etc., even if you never imagine yourself doing it. It's also a lot cheaper to build a bit bigger now, than to change your mind later!
damn straight. mr Shin.
Ive been looking at sheds for a little while now. It seems that the best idea, is some real thick ass concrete. Larger than I think 100mm minimum.
You will want at least one tall section thats prob about 4 meters high. So you can lift the car up to its maximum height. You never know what you will end up working on, once your mates and family find out you have a hoist Your everyones friend!
The selling point to my Mrs was that it will add an extra car spot. hahaha
Guess I just need to buy the house with the land around it to build now eh!?

I am also looking at another shed because my 4 car garage is not big enough![]()
I am looking at a 2.7high wall with a 22 deg pitch roof 6m X 9m long. The problem with the hoist being to one side is roof clearance. You my want a Barn style shed with a high centre part or change the roof position on a normal shed to slope front to back rather than side to side. Keep us informed on how this goes.
YEP...you need 4mtrs at minimum!....by the time you put a van or 4wd on there, your 1.8mtr hoist then equals 4mtrs at full height.......
you will want good lights, try getting some big arse workshop lights...working in the dark sucks when your under a car.....
how bout a heated concrete floor?no cold feet in the shed,
haha
blake![]()
also consider the trady and grays online for 2nd hand hoists.
although bear in mind power requirements - that one there is 240v but most workshop based are 3 phase.
4 meters min height is a good start. i've seen it done with less but its just plain silly although useful in some ways. so long as you can get a car up in the air with you standing under it and the bonnet open you should be set.
also think about the thickness of the slab that the hoist is going to bolt to ; plus the foundations of the slab - i'd speak with a decent architect/engineer first (*who does business based garages*) to get the low down on that. you wouldn't want the slab cracking with the hoist on it.
mmm 4mtrs is pretty high. It will be interesting to see what the council say about that.
I thought I would be able to get away with 3.2-3.5 area.
If you measure from the bottom of your door sills on the car to the top of the roof then add that to the height that you want to work at and this will give you the total height you will need. If you mates come over with a 4wd make sure they are only 3ft tall then they can work on it![]()
Also depending on how far from the fence you build the shed there is a wall height limit- usually 3 metres. Just ring your council and they will let you know the rules.
If you want to put Hydronic heating in the slab you will need min 120mm thick 32MPa concrete and i would go for SL82 mesh top and bottom. If you will have forklifts on it i would suggest going up to 150mm thick. I dont think i would bother with heating my shed with in slab heating, personally i would insulate it pretty well and put a gas or wood heater in it.
Some industrial carpet would be a good bet in the absence of heating, in particular, a stack of carpet tiles. They don't stop things rolling on them, they keep your feet from getting cold, and if you spill crap on them you can rip it out and replace it.

thanks for the feedback guys, Ive emailed the council to see what they have to say about the height. I wouldnt mind going 4mtrs becasue then I could put a mezanine floor above the second bay.
damn a hoist for sub 3K! now you got me thinking! -rep for you!!@![]()

i got offered a hoist for a grand last week, unfortunately i could not afford it. i know im gonna regret that
get the biggest possible shed you can afford in all dimensions, once you put cupboards and a work bench in you would be amazed how narrow 6 metres becomes.
