curious with these roller's,
do they only roll the inner lip?
and can they PUMP out the guard?
blake
Ok, this is a piece of piss, but since people asked about it i thought i would put up photos of what Matty did to the IPRA car on the weekend.
Stage1 - Bash guards
Ok, first thing to do is just to take the wheels off and give the lip of the guard a tap with a hammer to start the flattening.
Stage2 - Mount Roller
Mount the guard roller to the hub, in this case i had to drop the shocks as the car has only 25mm droop![]()
Stage3 - Roll from side to side
Ok, just pull the swingarm out so the rubber roller is contacting the guard, and roll from side to side slowly pulling the swingarm out more and more (its on a threaded rod so its easy to do)
Stage4 - Inspect
Nuff said
Stage5 - Unbolt and admire
Reverse of Stage2, just unbolt the roller and admire the guard.
Tools Used
From left to right: Guard roller, rubber mallet/hammer, wheel brace.
Missing the biggest tool of all though. Matt (MR1JZ) [Someone please supply picture of Matt in a humerous pose]
Seriously a piece of piss to do. We didnt flare mine with the roller, but it can be done just as easily, it only takes longer.
Bit of a warning though, it does tend to crack the paint off with the flexing of the guard, this can be slowed/prevented by heating the paint with a heat gun. Pretty simple. When i used to work in Melbourne we used to take about 15mins per corner for a 25mm flare, and charge about $75 a corner.

Can do either, depends on how much you wind out the lever arm.

If anyones got one in brisbane speak up![]()
you can buy them from bursons for like 130 bux
So if you want to stretch the guard, where abouts do you run it back and forward? just over the lip edge? or do you start at the top of original flaring and work your way down?
well you roll the lip up by using the main meat of the roller first and then you start applying more pressure using a smaller amount of the roller on the edge of the guard, the more pressure and less surface area of the roller you use the more of a lip you will get...
I used a fair bit of pressure and more of the surface area...that way it "pumps" the guard as opposed to lippping it...giving it a ghey verandah affect...which is easier but is harder to get flush fitment with

You know, a guard rolling tool looks like something that would be really handy for the club to buy for members to borrow. It's one of those tools that is hard to justify owning for your own use since it's only going to get one day of use per car you own but I think club members in general would give it a fair work out.
I'll be bringing this up at the next board meeting I feel.
Any advice on the front guards? I've read a few write ups on flaring guards now, and everyone seems to do the rears, and I've read a few referrences to the front guards having a bit more flex, and thus being harder to do well.
Is this justified or BS? I ask as I'm more interested in getting my front's pushed right out, a bit more like the newer lexus is250s. Definitely don't want to pay through the arse for something I can do myself, so any advice is appreciated.
Regards,
Chris.

fuck oath they are...but be warned...the cheap ones WILL REQUIRE REWELDING where the roller mounts to the hub plate...the welds were shit and had a total lack of penetration and the damn thing broke off in my hands...a little cleanup with the grinder and 5 minutes with a decent mig and its strong as ever now...

Chrisso, I did the fronts the same way...just make sure you belt the lip up first with the hammer and apply pressure from the outside of the guard with your hands to reduce the flex...fronts came out well on my car except on one side where i got a tiny 2mm split, but that way my fault becuase I decided to cut the small tabs that hold the inner guard on, and it weakend the guard...its no biggie for me because im repainting the car and a bit of weld and bog and she will be apples...
