click on the link to the old forums "mikey" had an ae82 twin cam with a 3SGTE in there
i have a spare 3SGTE motor out of a 91 GT4 celica and just wanted to know what would be invovled in fitting it into an AE82 corolla with teh 1.6 Carby motor.
other than teh usual computer, fuel pump and crap like that. what i want to know is will the 3sgte even fit in on the engien mounts, what gearbox is the easiest and cheapest to use, do i have to custom make drive shafts or cv's??
will the sump fit in the right place through the rack and crossmember?

thanks, i'll check it out.
Not likely that it's going to fit onto the 4ac mounts if that's what you're talking about - from memory the abovementioned car required a bit of cutting/welding to position the 3S mounts..Originally Posted by tai_180sx
MR2 turbo box is pretty strong and IMO would be the pick of the bunch.. Shifter cables are on the wrong side of the box for fwd but this can be modified. Not that cheap though I don't think?what gearbox is the easiest and cheapest to use
Some people have used V6 Camry boxes for fwd 3S applications but I'm not sure how well this will fit in an ae82 (or what driveshafts you'd need..)
ST185 box will fit, but requires a bit of modification as it was originally 4wd.. (i probably wouldn't recommend this option)
ST184 box will probably be the cheapest/easiest option, but not as strong as any of the above.
it will fit but its a tight squeeze only a few mm clearance from the strut tower and i believe a custom dump pipe needs to be made which can be quite tricky a friend used the 4 cylinder camry gearbox i think with billet driveshafts
edit: you will need custom mounts
I have seen this conversion and it was not "nice". Special mounts are needed, the exhaust was a nightmare jammed up against the front panels. The dearest part are the custom axles required. The V6 camry box is the only one to use. the celica/camry 4 cyl wont hack it, & the MR2 turbo has the shift cables on the wrong side .
my mate never had any trouble with his but the v6 one is preferrable there is sfa room in the engine bay and he allways had problems with heat even with vents in the bonnetOriginally Posted by terryo
i don't think i'll bother. i know it can be done but i have a spare 3sgte motor and accessories and had a AE82 corolla for $200 so i thought about. but it was just goin to be a weekend job, probably get sick of doin it after a couple weeks...lol
whats the best and cheapest car that i can bolt this motor into?
i'd assume it would have to be FWD. i'm thinking if i can pickup a car for under a grand i can put this motor in it and have a pretty nice sleeper and then just flog it off after i've had some fun.
a st164 celica would probably be the easiest cosidering they come with a 3sge in the first place
u mean st162 ?
yeh tai chuck it into a celica like mine 162,
yup (character limit)Originally Posted by Jorrs
Most of the Celica 3SGTE conversions getting around run a camry box, even worked examples aren't blowing gearboxes as much as you would expect.Originally Posted by terryo
If I were you I'd drop it in a old camry - cheap as p00 (you wouldn't need another gearbox ) and nobody would ever expect it. Nobody ever suspects the Camry...
theres a camary turbo getting around here in newcastle
first time i saw it i went wtf camary turbo never seen thst before
