a surge tank is an option but only if its a must
I'm interested in your findings.. I've tried an ra60 tank with internal pump but it was not close to fitting.
you can easily fit a surge tank in beihind the panels in the back. And the pumps can hide under that cover on the right hand side of the boot. I'll get you a photo when the wife brings her back if you want to see.

MA45 is bound to not fit.
you'll have to either find something in the XA2X series of celicas that came out fuel injected, or go custom.

I'm getting my RA23 tank modified (again-long story) to become an in-tank set-up. I'm using a tank cleaning specialist who welds tanks after he cleans them. He is the story in 25 words or less...get a in-tank pump assembly - extend the mounting bracket so that the pick-up will sit near the bottom of your tank, knock off the locking ring around the pick-up hole, enlarge that hole to about 80mm, weld on top of the tank a new thickish spacing ring, drill and tap the holes to mount the pick-up, and then screw it in. My varies a little from this but you get the picture.
How much is he charging for adapting your RA23 tank?

A carton, including the clean, and yes I know that it would be not so well baffled around the pick-up that I should never go below 1/4 of a tankful, but its the small price to pay for the mod. I am sick of the petrol smell from the back of the car.

The 28 fuel tank is much shallower, I couldn't see much hope of getting a pump in there without cutting up the tank quite a bit.
I reckon a swimmer pump from a SV21 Camry would be fine for a RA28 as the tank in the Camry is not deep at all.
Hmm... sounds like a bunch of kafufel. If the boot of the RA28 is the same as the RA23, then the spare wheel well is in the middle of the car, not left of centre, such as RA40/60/65 etc, which would discount those cars... what you need to do is find a car with a similar setup, similar sized spare wheel well, and centred spare wheel well... take a measuring tape to your local jap wrecker and look for some thing which looks like it will fit, then measure... otherwise, adapt your tank, as you can get in tank pumps which go in on an angle, or make yourself a bracket which will make it go in on an angle. Personally Ill be pulling out the coin for a custom made aluminium droptank... though a few cartons of XXXX plus materials should sort out a boilermaker I know.
