Hi there, is anyone using an autometer Speedo, either mph or kph, doesn't matter, I understand they are electric?? how does this work, do you need a seperate sensor in the gearbox too? any info would be great, thanks.

I’m not, but toying with the idea of re-engineering my dash and using one. So, I’ll subscribe to this thread to see what other's have experienced fitting them?

Autometer make electric and mechanical speedos. Obviously the electric ones require a speed sensor in the gearbox.

VDO do 300km/hr speedos and they are electronic input. you should be able to get a speed sensor from a MX83 grande/hilux/other cars. toyota also stock these sensors on the shelf for $300ish

I have one. An electronic one. You don't need a seperate sender for it.You simply configer it. You just use our existing speedo wire.

Basically, after you install it, you push and hold the button in, then you have to drive for 2 miles. Push the button again and it works it all out for you. It also has a pulse out to go back to the ECU a well.

ok, basic jist is I'm getting a J160 box to go behind my 1ggte in a RA23, apparently the J160 has an electronic speedo output..
or can I take this out and just use a manual cable like that W58?

You dont need a seperate sender for it, providing youve already got an electronic speedo output. If youve got a mechanical(cable) output then you need to do the mx83 sender conversion. if your doing the conversion REMEMBER THE SENDER USES A 5V NOT A 12V SIGNAL POWER SUPPLY. this especially applies if you buy new one for $300.
Im using a speco digital speedo, no issues now.
If your speedo doesnt have the autotune ability, the toyota sender is 4 pulses per rotation, then all you need is diff ratio/tyre size and your set

It's pretty likely the J160 sensor is the same one used in late-model W58's, in which case you can swap it for a W58 cable setup. Pull the sensor out and post a pic.

Norbie - I am hoping it will be that easy..
I don't have the gearbox yet, it's being sent from sydney.
otherwise an aftermarket speedo will be used I guess.

    Thanks guys.

Pic I was told is a J160 speedo sensor.
if that helps. The guy who supplied me this pic also swapped it over with a W58 cable driven unit.

    Hey,

Check out Dakota Digital gauges, see www.dakotadigital.com

Their speedo does up to and above 300kmph, going by the MPH they do up to 225, this is 360kmph!

They have a choice of connections going inline in an existing 'cable drive' or replacing the cable drive with a sender or tapping onto existing electronic sensor using a signal converter box!

yep. it looks identical to the A340e aristo speed sensor. i pulled out the electronic sensor and body/shaft/gear and put a a340e cable type speedo drive. i put the MZ12 cable in and away it went
