Ian, modern fairings are usually ABS plastic. Not sure if it reacts with metho though. Seems ok with thinners and wax/grease remover etc.

cleanliness i found was the key
my last spray attempt was my ta22. to this day it still shines like nothing else. i got a great result but made a few blunders along the way, happy to share.

    1. when u do a pearl metallic, cover your primer with a basecoat close to the color you're going to spray. i did a dark blue pearl (amazon mica, holden color) - i ended up using tonnes of paint to get the coverage.
    2. use 2 or more guns. saves changing nozzles. my guns were sub $50. i have 2 with 1.2mm nozzles - one for primer, one for color/clear, and a 2mm for hi fill.
    3. each time i finish with the gun. i fill it with supercheap shit thinner and run it thru the gun to clean it up against a piece of wood. u should see the piece of wood - could be hung in the art gallery as art i reckon.
    4. i use flap discs to pull paint off/lead off/back to bare thru rust then coat with anti rust, wash thoroughly, etch prime, prime then apply color. otherwise paint stripper has worked fine for me. i find the finish on bare metal seems to come up much better than on filled panels. nice and flat and neat.

i've also used all the motorspray paints/clears/thinners over the years, never an issue. my last quick coat of jam was on the corolla, that would have come up alot better if i'd have spent more time on it ; but ; it was a 100% improvement on what was already there.

i've never used 2pac (sic) - i've seen the finishes but don't have the air filtration to go with it.

i use a supercheap compressor with 50 litre tank and a little water trap.
i'll find some pics of the end result

Especially if some retard has perhaps used ArmorAll in the garage while the compressor is running. Compressor with a lung full of that stuff can pretty much only be used for tools after that....

hey guys. what sort of price range should i be looking at for 1 ltr of paint. i baught 3 ltrs of standard glossy black acrylic at roughly $50 a ltr. is that normal?

all up it cost 230 :O with 12 ltrs of thinners, 1 ltr of primer and 1 ltr of wax n grease remover.

did not expect it to cost this much at all.

I bought 2Ltrs of 2:1 iso free 2pak, and with the litre of hardener and 4ltrs of thinners, all up it was $155... from Pro-tek. Was plenty to re-spray the missus' laser back in original colour.

Im using a 2.5HP belt driven 40L compressor i bought at 1/2 price as it had a bent trolley wheel.
They normally retail at approx $500.

I dont see how you could get a consistent spray with anything smaller.
Its running about 75% of the time while spraying.

BTW... a direct drive 2.5HP compressor (the cheapies) compresses no where near the same amount of air as a belt drive.

I have a Puma 3hp with I think a 60L tank. Twin piston pump, belt driven, its teh bombzorz!! The compressor takes about 5seconds to cut out after I finish a solid spray run, so its holding over 100psi in the tank while I spray constantly. It cost about $8-900 and is the biggest you can jam on a 10A plug.

Andy, I used about 400ml of colour and about 400ml of clear in a 2pak clear over base doing the full fibreglass fairings on my YZF600R... and that was with a yellow and silver, the silver went on well, but the yellow took a zillion coats to get coverage. Great finish though.

thanks mate. did u use a primer at all? or just sanded back the original colour and went over the top with paint?

will the paint stick to bits that have been sanded back to plastic, and to bog?

Yeah, 4L is enough to do the full exterior and engine bay on a car... interior as well if you're careful about efficiency.

    zactly what i use

dude by the time u thin the paint (i do 200ml paint, 300ml thinner) you'll have almost enough to do a large car. i used just over 1 litre putting a new thin coat of jam on my ae92 sedan!

    no its not wasted
if you happen to scratch your paint job at least you have the right color match
dont forget to seal the paint tin properly, and store in a cool place and your paint will last for ages

i put some leftover 2 pac mixed with hardener and reducer in a large coffee jar sealed it up stuck it in the bar fridge and it still is in its fluid state after 3 weeks
