Default Torque settings for head studs?

Ok, finaly got the head on the block yesterday (1.5JZ). I am usings ARP head studs, as opposed to bolts on this project. I have the torque sequence from Toyota, but it did not come with the torque settings.

The instructions with the studs stated 65ft/lbs (which I'm pretty sure equates to 88Nm) for use with an alloy head, which I followed. Just curious to know if this seems tight enough before I go and put the cams back in? I might just be being a little pedantic on this, but after the hassles I've suffered earlier trying to build this, I really don't want to get this wrong!

when we put our 1j head back on (still on the 1j block) we used arp studs aswell and from directions from troy at jb race engines, we tensioned them to 125ft/lbs.

we started to put it back on with the orig bolts but one snapped at 110lbs

almost hanging off the bar to get them that tight.

no need to go too crazy ,we put 7/16 unf 12.9 grade head studs in a daihatsu recently and the chart said 68 ft lbs so that they got . then i was talking to ridgecrest who made the head gasket and he suggested 80 ft lbs . after pulling the thread out of the block on about the 2nd one i was after blood ,so be careful its been done plenty of times and no one likes admitting to it . cheers bigwad

Just be careful-125 ft lbs will put 7/16 ARP studs well into yield, and the material/stud is not designed for this.

The only time you can put that much torque onto a 7/16 stud is if they are the ARP L19 unobtanium ones. (about $700us a set)

    68-75 is about right.

Its best to ring ARP and ask. The torque setting will also change depending on what lube you use. For example; ARP Moly lube, Loc-tite, 30wt oil (all acceptable says ARP).

I didnt have the right torque specs for my flywheel bolts so I went ahead with a breaker bar and did it as tight as possible and snapped one. What a pain in the ass that was. Do yourself a favour and ring ARP to make sure. Do it early in the day so you catch them while they're open. Your call.
