the engine will bolt in but youll need the ecu etc to go with the new engine , so buy a half cut or get an aftermarket ecu, speak to dunkymonkey on ozcelica he's just finishd the conversion
I know its no great big conversion but can anybody give me a heads up on any problems with converting a 3S GE from an import 202 into my 1992 ST 184.Eg engine mounts and the like.

Its relatively easy, a mate and I pulled it off with a haynes manual and little idea what we were doing in the beginning. Just make sure you do your homework before starting and get a few contacts that can help out when you get stuck. It's a great learning experience if you've never played with engines much before! The people on these forums are also an awesome source of information.
a 3SGE from a st182 half cut will bolt straight into a st184 body, my only concern would be with the legalities of doing the conversion, you may need to get it engineered cause it isnt the same size engine, 5SFE=2.2 and 3SGE=2.0, i would do a little research with the appropriate authorities beforehand.

That completely slipped my mind!
In Victoria you'd need an Engineers certificate due to:
1. Change in capacity.
2. Increase in power by more than 10%
3. Engine is imported and may not comply with emissions standards.
4. Engine was not offered as an option on locally delivered cars.
... and probably another half a dozen reasons. The laws are probably different in NSW tho.
Like everyone else has mentioned. The conversion is quite straight forward. All mounts will line up and you can reuse the 5sfe g/box. Wiring will involve the most work.
As for legalities, the 3sge motor came factory fitted in the st18**-st20** chassis, so engineering would be straight forward and shouldnt cost much.
I dont think police will really notice the difference anyway.

Hi, Im enthused about corollas..
ah crap that was me
nah, you would use the gen2 ST182 loom. all the plugs are identical to the 184 and wiring is very straight forward.
the ST182 also has better suspension and also run 275mm front rotors, identical to the ST185.

thanks heaps for all the info guys. theres a cut of an import 202 with a 3S GE down at ng jap spares. they reckon they'll drop the wholr lot in there for $2000. can anybody give me the thumbs up on that cause i'm really not to sure as far as price goes
2k for 1/2 cut plus install, sounds pretty alright to me
$2000 is an absolute bargain mate. Make sure they do a proper job tho. The engine kit and gearbox cost me $2500 alone! For them to install it would've been another $2000 on top of that.
i know this is waking a dead thread and such but im also looking at doing the convert as my s big end is going and im too lazy to spend the $1500 i was told to fix it so i got a 3sge gen 1 here that i got for $200 including ecu loom and such but what i wanna know is cause the engine was on a auto do i have to get a new flywheel or will my 5s-fe flywheel and clutch blot up to it, and also will my dizzy and shit do too, as ive been told it will but i wanna be in the clear
cheers
Pretty sure that putting a gen 1 3SGE into ST184 is illegal (unless you want to get it engineered for emissions purposes).
If i were you I'd just replace the 5SFE with a fresher one (you can buy a whole engine for <$800 if you shop around). They go pretty much just as well as a gen 1 3SGE anyway.
its legal here in qld we got almost no rules at all lol
and i cant be fucked getting another 5s as the only ones around here are outta holden apollos and such and are pretty muched fucked
No rules,... Speak for your self haha....
the big ends wont cost 1500 to replace if your just going to replace them..
