what paint is on the rims? if the metal bits came off hot.. and it is powdercoating or polymer based paint, it may have melted into the paint a bit.....

if you are prepared to polish, start with maybe 400 grit paper and see if it comes off easily

I use this stuff called 'Blast-Off'
Comes in a 20L container, with a mild corrosive warning sticker.
Can be used watered down on paint, or straight on rims.
    Works a treat.

    Listen to this one!

Some of the companies that make it are Autosmart (best one around), Autokleen, and GTI... (GTI may have possibly been bought out by Autokleen, but it's been a few years since I was in the biz)

Have you tried the Eagel 1 wheel cleaner. It is for factory painted rims NOT chrome. I use it for the first time yesterday. I was truely amazed at the result.

Spray on leave 30 sec. scrub lightly whith a soft brush. Rince with a hih=gh presure cleaner. Absolultly NO effort..

The stuff needs to be stored in teflon containers, as it etches glass bottles. It is commomly used to etch glass for this reason.

    Quote from wiki:
"Dilute hydrofluoric acid is sold as a household rust stain remover."

Don't play with the concentrate stuff though...

"In the body, hydrofluoric acid reacts with the ubiquitous ions of calcium and magnesium and so can disable tissues and organs whose proper function depends on these metal ions. Exposure to hydrofluoric acid may not be initially painful, and symptoms may not occur until several hours later, when the acid begins to react with calcium in the bones. Under most circumstances, hydrofluoric acid exposure results in severe or even lethal damage to the heart, liver, kidneys, and nerves. Initial treatment to hydrofluoric acid exposure usually involves thorough rinsing (for up to 15 minutes) of to the exposed areas followed by the application of calcium gluconate gel. If exposure is high, or too much time has passed, a calcium gluconate solution may be injected directly into a local artery or surrounding tissues. In all cases, hydrofluoric acid exposure requires immediate professional medical attention. If coming in contact with human skin or bone the acid can severely burn and then decompose the bone, potentially necessitating amputation of the affected limbs."
