Default Oil light... how long should it stay on?

I'm getting a little worried that i'm damaging my car when i start it up [after leaving it for a while]. The oil light stays on for about 4 seconds and i can hear it change note and drop revs when the oil pressure builds. My question is, how long is too long for it to stay on? and is this normal for a 1JZ-GTE [ex JZX81 Chaser]?

What can i do about it?

when was the last time you changed the oil filter?
    what brand was it?

(thinking the anti-drain back valve on filter is shit or not working)

I bought a Ryco filter and put it in about 3000km ago.

It was taken off to get to the fuel filter at one point though and was done up a bit tighter than normal so it would seal again. Could that have damaged the anti-drain valve thingo?

Maybe i should just do an oil change with new filter and see if that fixes the problem.

But to my questions... how long is too long for the light to stay on and how much damage is likely to be done the way it is at the moment?

The light tends to stay on for a little while on my Cressida, I don't think it's doing any particular damage... Ryco filters are shit, pull it apart, and it's the equivelant of a toilet roll in a tin can, get yourself a puralator filter next time you go to super cheap or similar.

4 seconds probally means a bit sludgy and slightly worn motor , but nothing to worry about if the hot idle pressure is ok .
A healthy JZ if still takes 2 seconds just like lots of other engines.

I'm using what the manual recommends... 10W30 [if my memory serves me correctly]. I'm using Nulon brand if that makes any difference.

Surely if the motor was "worn and sludgy" then there would be other symptoms. When the cam covers were off [when i was putting the engine in] it looked pristine and clean under there... as if the engine had been nicely cared for. I've seen some horrific looking sludge under in some 1J's that come into the country as halfcuts. This one seems quite good... pulls hard and is only a little smokey under full load/boost.

What's the part number for the Toyota filter? ... or a locally delivered model of Toyota that shared the same filter.

    +rep to all.

might be time to up viscosity a bit, your 1jz is probably 15yo now,

ive been told (havent tried it myself) but TRD oil filter will up the pressure a few psi also (they are expensive...$40 a pop)

err... they restrict more than the stock one?

i think the rumour is that the case is thicker/stronger, so it can withstand higher oil pressure.

no need for one in normal car, or even most/all race cars..

How many KM's has the car done?

If it's starting to show signs of age it may be worth running thicker oil, i've seen a few 7M's over 150k km's that show signs of the rings starting to wear out. FWIW I only tend to run mineral oils in my cars as well. I don't think there's any point in running synth in a 7M anyway.

hmmm... i dunno how many km the engine has done. It came over as a halfcut and i never got to see the dash. I doubt i would have believed the odometer anyhow.

I only use mineral oils too. Especially in my mini which apparently it's quite harmful to use synthetic oils in them.

30 is vairly thin, perhaps running a thicker cold oil would help you reach adequate pressure quicker upon startup.

mine takes 3-4 seconds for the light to turn off.

if i havent driven it for a week or two it can stay on for 5-6 even.

im using HPR 10 penrite goo, so it is a bit too thin, but the power, oh, its sooo gooodddd.
