I have aquired a 6 speed transmission for my car. I was told I need to also buy a 6 speed shifter assembly but do anyone know if the shifter cables/linkages are the same as the 5 speed version?? If not can someone provide part numbers?
Thank You

...... butt scratcher?!
thank you for the reply witzl,
I am still awaiting for the administrator of twincam to grant me permission to post, not sure why is it taking so long. But in the mean time have anybody here had experiences with this? As you know the AE9X and the AE10X/11X has different shifter assemblies so the procedures are not exactly the same. Also they mentioned "shift bracket modification" but did not care to elaborate.
When doing the ae101/111/112 short shifter guide that i think Whitzl put up a while back, you didnt need to change the cables to use the other shifters. So perhaps the cables are the same. They are no doubt the same legth, but i would assume they also use the same clips either end...?
Cheers,
Jase
That is true, I am currently awaiting the 6speed TRD short shifter to arrive by mail. I am sure the clips are the same from what I see in the pictures. But according to the guide on twincam the cables ended up being 1-2mm too short for some. I just want to make sure now instead of on the garage floor in the middle of my swap.
thank you for your response Jase![]()
Hey i noticed that the new corolla has a C56 in it , what 6 speed is that.
Dave
The C56 is supposed to be a 5 speed
I have both 5-speed & 6-speed trans & shifters sitting around here somewhere, if could find them. It would appear that they are interchangable, but don't quote me on that.
The 6-speed is known to be weak, which is why I'm not going to use mine. As it needs synchros, it's probably scrap. I don't know why anyone would bother with them.
Alot of people in America especially want to go for the 6speed gearboxes. The gear length are different between 5 and 6 speed but other then that there is no advantage. c56 boxes come out in the facelift ae101 truenos etc and the ae111 levins etc too. They are a nice reliable and strong gearbox

AE111 Carib BZ Touring and 100-series Corolla BZ Touring wagons got them as standard also. I have been told that doing the bearings (which may well not need replacing) & synchros on mine would cost over a grand, so it's going to go to the scrap-metal dealer for recycling...
syncros you can buy from toyota and if you have a good hookup they arnt expensice. I did syncros in my e58 and it wasnt that difficult. Its jus time consuming
Matt
Huh. I was going by what a transmission repair outfit told me. Thanks, I'll check Toyota out!
havnt completed conversion myself but have parts in garage for c160 swap if my current c52 box dies. im currently running an ae101 lever in an ae82 mount for shorter shift (in an ae82). i measured the shifter travel of this setup and it's sufficient to select all gears with the c160. i was told that the 5speed cables didn't have enough travel so i guess proof is in the pudding.
ive managed to do a 2nd gear synchro replacement in an ae101 c52 box. but i had a toyota manual to follow. was $90 from toyota NZ for the synchro. the hub was well worn along with 2nd gear. so attacked it with die grinder to sharpen mesh teeth. can't imagine it'll last long if its only case hardened. 5th gear is a bitch to remove. not an easy thing to do.

I retained the AE92 5-speed cables when I did the 6-speed conversion in an AE92 levin, The AE92 shifter base needed clearancing to allow the lever to move enough to select 6th.
Anyone got pictures of this, trying to modify a 5 speed shifter ae101 shifter to suit c160... Got it selecting reverse, but everytime i try to select 5th or 6th it won't go across far enough. The left / right linkage cable appears to be the problem as when i disconnect it, I get enough movement to bring it across
EDIT: Looks like the selector when in the middle (3/4th) it is about 2cm further back than the 6 speed is. Looks like for an ae82/92 it is easy to mod, but the plastic ae101 shifters arent so easy.
Guess one option is to extend the linkage cables, but that is a bit bodgey.
Anyone know where to buy a shifter from, after market / short shift etc is ok..
