Default 4AGE .... what generation motor do i have

Hi all, i am just a little confused as to what generation block that i have in my 90 model SX corolla with the 100kw motor, i think that it is a Third Generation 4AGE motor with the oil cooled pistions

    1. I did not think that this block had the oil cooled pistons but after reading "Phil Bradshaw web page" i think that i do have the Third Generation 4AGE in this vehicle.
    http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/phil....Specifications

    2. Now to my next question ..... i have a 4AGZE (i think it has a compression ratio of 8:1 ~ as it has the big port head and it does not have the oil cooled pistons). If i have the oil cooled piston motor in my SX corolla (Third Generation 4AGE) i plan to put the 4AGZE 8:1 pistons into the block with the oil squirters.

I think that i have read somewhere but i can not find or confirm if there are any modifications needed to put the 8:1 pistons into the oil squirter block.

Any advise or help or links would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Gav

cut outs in the pistons for starters.

next issue is tackling the little ends as later bottom ends used 20mm gudgeons rather than the previous 18mm versions.

whats wrong with running high comp? better all round than low comp thats for sure.

    cheers

    1. yes if it's the original engine that came with the car, it's a small-port that has the 7 rib block and no TVI-S and yea you'll have the higher comp..

    2. why don't you just use the block instead of just the pistons? big ends and crank journal look the same.. i remember reading somewhere it wasn't possible but there was a big argument that it was.. i was just wondering why they didn't just use the smallport's 7 rib block and higher comp.. and use the GZE head .. at most it's only 10 psi, i've seen people turbo the stock standard smallport up to 12 psi on a safe tune and run it reliably... (not entirely sure for how long though)..

early 7 rib bigport 4agze/4age's share the same rotating assembly sizes as the later 7 rib smallport 4agze/4age's.

_FNQ_rolla_ , what exactly are you trying/wanting to do?

actually the later ones are a bit lighter.... but from a size POV, yes the early 4AGZE have the same size rods as the later ones.

*IF* you do have a squirter block.... then you have the same crank AND rods as the later 4AGZE... NO NEED to use the crank or rods from the early 4AGZE.

The piston is the problem and the easy way is to notch the piston... the problem is this can cause problems because the piston was designed without the notch. The piston could fail (not saying it will...)

Have you thought of getting later 4AGZE pistons? Then the problem is fixed..... You'd have to "manage" 8.9 to 1 compression..........

Well i think that i do have the oil squirting block in my 90 model SX corolla.

To make things a little clearer i was planing to put my 8:1 4AGZE pistons and rods onto my 3 generation block, but i am unsure if there was something that need to be done to the 8:1 pistons to make them work / operate with the oil squirting block.

I want the 8:1 pistons so i can run upto 25psi boost and i would prefere to run the oil squirting block with this set up (to help keep things cool/and oiled as i live in the top end of Australia where it is always HOT) so is there anything that has to be done or will it just work fine.

At the very least.... you will need to machine a groove into each piston for squirter clearence. There may be some aftermarket pistons that are available as 8 to 1 AND have the notch for the squirter. and aftermarket might be the way to go if you are running 25 psi!!!

the pistons are quite different and swapping them around in old worn bores is not a good idea. we machine weisco forged ones to get different comp ratios depending on the head chamber volume and boost required. most of the aftermarket pistons are made to suit the later 20mm gudgeon pins which you will get from any oil-squirter equipped block.
25psi boost is a big ask for any 4AG, and from experience, I doubt you will hold it together using factory 8.9 CR pistons.
