Hey Miles,
I found my detachable shaft thingy (the type i think you are looking for) one in a KE70 wagon if that means anything
I used the ke70 one, but I have two now and they vary in connection type, so look hard before you buy.

yeah the 2 connection type is eluding me every where. I know you guys have pick-a-part over there which would be real handy. Most wreckers in perth won't let you into the yard because of liability.
If any 1 comes across the 2 peace type let me know. I'm going to hve another go at finding 1 today.
hey jeffro you probably solve this but you can compress a ma70 colum to reach the rack if you have a P/S rack. I have 1.
Doesn't work if you have a manual rack.
Cheers
Alex
I found them very hard to find over here, seems I was just lucky the first time I found one.
I have a one piece one now too.
Yea man, sadly tho, neither ma70 or ke70 bits where even close to working for me. i have a 'special' cross member position and PS so slightly unique
I ended up using ma61 lower shaft and ma70 steering column. Linked up perfect with no compressing, lengthening of shafts.
Actaully, that reminds me that i may still have the ke70 lower shaft that you need. I will check my hoard for you on the weekend if ya want.
the shaft between the 2 unis i had made to lenght by a toolmaker. cost $45 and took 2 days.
as to the steering bits in my conversion i used 3 ke70 steering columns from varying age cars,
One had a rod attached directly to the column, another had unis on the column and spearate rod.
it really depends on what mood toyota where in as to how the steering has been set up.
i found this the easyest way to do what i needed.

You can extend the columns around that area.. Done it on 3x conversions now. Just need a vice and hammer![]()
There is a pic I posted of how to do it somewhere on toymods but buggered if I can find it sorry.
so i have herd, but the one that i had refused to budge, even a shop press couldn't get it to move =/
thats why i went with the machined shaft. ill see if i can get another KE shaft from the wreckers and try it again.

Just trying to piece together the bits of this conversion, but there's a few missing links...
KE70 Crossmember, KE70 Rack I have..
RA65 Steering column seems the most popular?
What about tie rod ends? I'm sure I remember seing that I'll need YN?? Hiace tie rod ends?
Mikie has suggested AE86 steering knuckles (HERE)
Is there anything else I'm missing??
'77 RA28LT #2 ← 2.2L 18RG...
last 2 options are correct. power arms will give you better lock to lock. in my opinion its not worth doing unless you have the power steer knuckles. hiace will be the go but you might need to cut them down a tad.
cheers mat
I used KE70 xmember, rack and steering column. I think advantage of ra65 is height adjustable.
I used ke70 outer tierod ends and ra60 inner (as I extended my control arms 20mm each side) but if no extending the ke70 inner is fine.
Ra28 knuckles I used..
Sorry for the n00b questions, but after some clarification on the following:
- Is it best to use the RA28, KE70 or either LCAs? (my 28 & KE ones seem to be slightly different lengths!)
- With the tierod ends I cant seem to figure out what a YN hiace is, I can only find the YN model hilux... is it the same thing? If so, far as I can tell the YN model hilux ran from about 1985 to 1997, will anything from this range do the job?
Cheers,
Ben
