Default o2 sensor wire colours, 20v

I understand that hooking up an o2 sensor wrongly can screw up your ecu. So need quick help with wires.

    Bought a 4 wire universal:
    1x black- signal to ecu
    2x white- heater
    1x grey- ground

Took off my orignal o2 sensor to use my plug.
    2x black
    2x grey

whats the best way i should wires this up.

My suggestion would be to post this question in Tech and Conversions... Leaving this up on the Toyotas for sale site will earn you nothing but flame....

Sorry I know little about 02 sensor wiring..

    Welcome to the site..

    Hi,

    Thread moved to tech area.

Lostie... you appear a tad lost... this is (or was until it was moved) the "For Sale" section.

do any of the black or grey wires have a trace?
are they the colours on the harness side or the sensor side?

trace is a thin line of colour on the wire, to identify it... ie.. black with white trace, yellow with green trace etc.

try looking at the colour of the wires on the loom side, rather than the old sensor side. i think you will have three different colours there. or at least be able to make sense of them

    thanks for the trace adivce.

I got the universal o2 which doesnt come with a plug. so i cut the plug off my old sensor,

i am now trying to connect the universal o2 with my old plug . Old plug wires dont have traces, just plain blacks and greys.

    this is where im lost.

yup, so look at the plug on the car side of th eplug, not the sensor side...

the car side of the plug (not the bit you cut off the old sensor) should have different colours for the signal and signal earth.

have looked at wire colours on harness side of my oxyegen sensor plug.

    1x black
    1x black with red trace
    1x red with black trace
    1x peach/orange with black trace

oxgyen sensor side of old sensor

    2x black
    2x grey

    universal oxygen sensor

    1x black
    1x grey
    2x white

    Now what to do...

    first thing...

with IGN off, put multimeter set to continuity/resistance, and check for consinutity between each wire and ground (chassis or -ve terminal of battery)

that should tell you which two wires are ground.

next, turn IGN to ON, and check voltage between the other two wires and ground. one wire should have voltage. this is the power to the heater.

    my total guess is..
    the black wire is signal,
the black with red, and red with black are power/ground (doesn't matter which is which) for the heater,
and the orange with black trace is signal ground.....

oh, you could also take the plug out of the ECU, and check for continuity between the OX pin, and each of the wires at the other end.. that should tell you which is the signal wire...
    (and maybe the colour also)

    report back
