Anyone know what gear oil was originally specified for the W58 by toyota? I would imagine you could find this in the original owner's manual if youre lucky enough to have this.
I have some gear oil in the shed but I want to know what was originally specified so i can decide which oil to use.

Thanks Wilbo!
I have a few bottles of Penrite Gear oil 75 which is synthetic oil rated SAE 75W-80, but it also mentions its designed for use where automatic transmission fluid was specified for use in the manual transmission, and lists some manufacturers that use it but toyota isnt included.
It also mentions Penrite Gear oil 80 is SAE 80W-85, and toyota is listed as one of the specific applications.
Im thinking the stuff I have might be a little too thinmight play it safe and get some of the thicker stuff....

castrol vmx-80 will do the trick.
+1, i use it in my R154 and shifts better than my W57 with penrite oil (sin)Originally Posted by IN 05 NT
Go to your local repco or aussie auto, they will have all the manufactureres specifications either in booklet form or on their computer base.
Its most helpful believe it or not, although Wilbo does have undeniable truth![]()
Well yeah Aussie Auto recommended I use this oil but it says its for use where auto transmission fluids are specified, which i dont think is the case with teh w58. Plus we've learnt not to always rely on their recommendations, they recommended some stuff to dad for the st162 gearbox and it munched itThey give me good prices at AA but some (not all) of them just have NFI some of the time

redline gear oil FTW!
Wouldnt use redline oil unless your syncros were stuffed or crunchy.
VMX 80 will do the job.![]()
LOL, what so ull use VMX till they are stuffed![]()

ill admit its expensive shit, that is no reason not to run it before the box is shagged tho.
Depends on how you treat the box too.
I heard stories that redline isnt all that if your syncros arent stuffed.
Low klm box use 75 /80 oil, normal secondhand worn box use 80 /90
