Default what celica gearbox for '74 torana?

    Hey

A mate of mine wants a 'cast iron' celica gearbox for his 1974 torana. Is there a thread that tells me what model boxes fit to the holden V8? I did a quick search and didn't find much.
He says that it must be a cast iron box and have a detachable bellhousing. He has the adaptor bellhouse, he just needs the box.

So what model boxes will fit? What models are the cast iron boxes? Anyone have one for sale?

    Hi,

Probably a W50 or W55 would be the go.

Check out this site for adapters......

Must be a cast iron box? Then he wants a W50, better known as Celica steel case 5 speed. They come with detachable bellhousing, and you can buy bellhousings (in fact whole kits) from Castlemaine Rod Shop or Dellow. The boxes are pretty cheap - should be able to pick one up for anywhere around $100-300.

It'll be fine behind a stock 308, but if he's got a worked 355 stroker, I don't like his chances. Better he just upgrade to a "Supra turbo" R154 gearbox, but comes at a premium - $1500 to 2K.

    Thanks heaps for the info.

He actually told me he made a detour in the early 80's while driving from Melbourne to Adelaide to visit a shop that sold gearboxes. I guess the Castlemaine Rod Shop was where he went. I'll tell him to go back.

    Cheers

As for finding a W50 - RA23/28/40 Celica, and RT132 Corona are good places to look - these cars were factory fitted with them.

    Red face it is funny

It was at a five o’clock tea. A young man came to the hostess to apologize for his lateness. “So good of you to come, Mr.Jones, and where is your brother?” “You see we're very busy in the office and only one of us could come,so we tossed up for it.” “How nice! And so original, too! And you won?” “No,” said the young man absently,“I lost.”------------------------------------------------------------signature: China thumb Usb Flash Drives ManufacturerChina neck strap Usb Flash Drives Manufacturer China swivel Usb Flash Drives Manufacturer China pen Usb Flash Drives Manufacturer

W50 is the 5 speed version of the W40 (4 speed Corona box). Same price, one less cog. Good idea.
