    Default Gearbox Reconditioning

Hey does anyone know of a place on the northside of brisbane ( I live near strathpine/brendale) that can recondition and/or swap my W56 hilux box? I thought I would ask here to see if any of you guys know of a place that does quality work and hopefully won't rip me off

    give these guys a yell

there in kedron, really nice guys to deal with. For my w58 it was going to cost up to 1k for them to fully rebuild but if the box isnt in the car that will save you some dough.

Thanks guys. Paying around 400 sounds alot better than 1k but that is probably wishful thinking so i'll have a look into that difflap place

I have a W58 in my mk2 that i sent to castlmaine rod shop a few years ago , it cost me $1000 to get fully recond . They used better bearings with more balls in the race for the 3 main ones .
I priced these 3 bearings myself to justify the cost and they were $90 each , So with the other 3 bearings , synchros etc etc parts were like $650 . So plus $350 for labour theres the 1K.
You get what you pay for , a $450 reco is not going to have a full box of new parts.
    I have a W58 with 87000klm if yr keen $750

agreed.. there are varying levels of "gearbox reconditioning"..
it could be just seals? or seals and any broken bearings? or all bearings.. or plus synchros, or plus shift forks.... etc

check what you are paying for.

From memory mine was still pretty good, no stuffed gears, synchros or forks. Just a few bearings and seals/gaskets. Also W50 may be <$$ than W56 or 58.

Well the main reason i am thinking of getting it reconditioned is because i think that the synchro for 4th may be screwed or well on its way and its making disturbing grinding and whining noises. Do you think i send it somewhere to get it repaired for cheaper or would a full reco be easier

i bought a rebuild kit for my R154 from driftmotion.com, ended up being 300$ shipped from the US
and 300$ for laybour ( although he didnt start it for over a week and a half....! )
im guessing he did a good job, changes gear smoothly and isnt noisey

Would simply buying a recon'd box be the same/cost more? I have no problem with putting one in or taking one out its just the insides of the box i have no idea about
