    Default 3tgte + T50

hi guys ive searched through the forums and havnt been able to find what i was looking for so my question is, can a 3tgte thats not running on a turbo bolt up to a T50 until i can find a w55 to go with it? reason for not running the turbos is that i cant drive the car with them on it due to vic P plater restrictions

    thanks in advance,
    joe
If it moves and it shouldn't use duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it should use WD40.

I am lead to believe the T series engine was the first to have the T50 gearbox behind it hence the 'T' in T50. The 2T engine had this box behind it so I would have to say that yes you can fit a T50 gearbox to your engine if you find the correct item.

    hey mate,

The T50 can bolt up to the 3tgte no problems, however a 2T bellhousing, and a 2t flywheel will have to be used, as well as a T50 clutch kit.

if you are not running the turbo, you will have no issues running a t50 behind the 3T.
just keep in mind though, what efi system are you running, the 3tgte computer will not work with the engine if there is no turbo....all the mixtures will be wrong.

what car is it in may i ask...good luck though.

I dont know about the computer comment as the engine is not always on boost so the mapping is going to cover pressure from 0psi to probably 12 or so. Admittedly it will probably not be optimal.

T50 will bolt up, my 3t had one behind it until i got a w58.

...That the computer still has to know how to run the engine N/A cos that turbo isn't going to be on boost all the time...

You can run a turbo motor/ecu without turbo just fine because the ecu knows what both atmospheric pressure is as well as boost

You can run a N/A motor/ecu with a turbo with limited success in some cases, however since the ecu normally has not been programmed to recognise a wide enough range of pressure higher than atmospheric it can usually be described as an abortion

    Cheers

    you most likely are right.....

however i was pretty sure the 3t's only had the AFM and the TPS that fed a signal to the ECU in regards to fuel air mix. I agree with all the comments above if the engine ran a map sensor, however with the afm, it would still be sucking similiar amounts of air.

oh...wait on...ok, can someone confirm that
no turbo = less sucking of air = lower afm reading = less fuel dumped - ok my logic kicked in a bit late....apologies

but in my defense, the engine will not run at its optimum in this set up.

    Agreed...
Turbo engine without turbo = just plain lag period...

im more than likely going to be running a microtech ta10, but a 3tgte would run better and more efficient than a 2t with extractors and a cam

i wouldnt be soo sure when running it with out the turbo...

it would prob guzzle fuel and give very minimal improvement in comparison. bolt the turbo to the side and configure the microtech you will get a sweet little package of power. but i dont quite see the point in going to all the trouble in configuring the maps for non-turbo with the microtech, only to have to redo it all again when you get off your p's. even more so not worth it if you are paying someone else to do the tuning for you, ie not cheap.

hey its all an experience though so it just depends on what you want to do.
a fair few people are having a bit of fun with the 2T's especially pre conversion while they learn about their car, (i say this with no idea about your knowledge, experience with your car or any other relevant factor)

    Hi,

I agree with 79GT.... put in a 2T engine. There should be some around for a good price, and it just bolts in. Sure, it won't be too gutsy, but it will get you around economically and reliably.

When over your Ps, then do the 3TGTE. Besides, over the next couple of years, while on your Ps, you can slowly (as time and money permit) rebuild the 3TGTE, so when it is time to use you know it is fresh and strong.

ive already got a 2T in there. getting the exhaust done in the next week or so and planning on putting an agressive cam i just bought in either tonight or tomorrow morning. ill be doing most of the work in the conversion and my uncles both being mechanics will be helping and know a few ppl that can do the tuning for me. but i am seeing your point about it beening alot to get it mapped now then remapped later. the other thing that i found out last night is that i can drive the 3TGTE if i can get my manager from work to sign off on it for vicroads.

I have seen some factory TA/TT6x corona/carina/celica's with the 3T-GTE and T50 from the factory. There were a few at wreckers here in NZ so i'd assume its ok to run - turbo n all. These were all the late model T50's with bigger bearings etc.

Interesting, presume they had T50 on the chassis plate and weren't swapped at some stage of their life? when I had the EPC running on my computer a few years back there was no mention of a T50 being fitted for either the TA63 Celica/Carina or the TT142 Corona. You never know what they will do to cut costs or use up extra gearboxes though. I did pull a 22 spline T50 from a 3T-EU powered TA63 Carina earlier this year.
