    Default 1JZ Non-Interferance?

I've done some searching through the old forums and it seems that the 1JZ is a non-interferance engine. Am I correct in this?

The reason I ask a mechanic has said that somehow my cam timing is out and that I most likely have some bent valves. I'm wondering how this is possible? Should I be going and getting a second opinion?

    Cheers

If it is a completely standard non VVTi 1JZGTE then it should be a non interference engine.

    Take car home.
Correct cam timing yourself - it's pretty easy.
    Do a comp test.
If comp is low, do a leak down test on that (those) cylinder(s). This should in theory tell you what the loss of compression is due to.

Yep, completely standard non VVTi 1JZ-GTE. Thanks GT. + Rep for you!

How does one go about ensuring the Cam timing is correct? If it's pretty easy like you say then I'll have a go a it at...

Manually turn engine to TDC of compression stroke - line up the timing mark on the pulley with the "0" on the timing cover. Take off the timing covers. You will see a little mark on each cam gear. This should line up with the mark on timing cover behind the cam gears - you'll see what I mean.

If they don't then your cam timing is out. Now this has happened for a couple of reasons - either a new timing belt was installed and cam timing was incorrectly set at the time of installation, or the timing belt has slipped, probably due to wear of the teeth and therefore needs to be replaced.
