Default 1GFE - how weak is it actually?

Hi guys, I have the 1GFE VVTI in my car and i'm aware that its quite an old design with I think and iron block. I know people with the IS200 have opted to supercharge or turbo or rip it out alltogether for more power. Has anyone played with it the naturally aspirated way?

I'm also the owner of this motor ('99 1g-fe) and have just one question - does the oil sump is the same as old gze or gte series have ???

You'd be wasting your time with the 1GFE if you remain NA.
If you want to stay NA and stay 2.0L, then get the BEAMS 3SGE and work that.
If you just want to stay NA then drop a 1UZ/3UZ in there.

yeah UZ's are great, but i can't afford it now.
so at first stage i'm going to supercharge 1g-fe, maybe next year i'll going to UZ.
my engine already out of car, and ready to be filled with forged pistons + gze connection rods. i suppose what this setup can handle ±300rwhp, what will be enough for me at the moment.

the one thing i'm worry about is oil system

and I'm totally agree what 1g na is not a way to go.

The three ways to improve NA power:

Efficiency = exhaust & air filter are your only real gains, then cams and head work but generally expensive
Revs = go hand in hand with the above but may be expensive due to computer limitations
Displacement = prohibitive, better off replacing it with something already bigger, or forced induction
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....

    G'day all,
I have an 04 IS200, great car, but it's lack of midrange power is a real dissapointment. I have asked a few of the tune shops in Perth on which way to go. I got told spending money on a NA 1G is a total waste. C-Red suggested the beams motor with manual box or VVTI 1J or 2J (but these would loose some of the good handling, that the standard IS200 has). I am thinking of instead getting another 1GFE and striping it down and rebuilding it to be able to run a good single turbo setup. This way most of the car is kept original and most of the accessories will work

Theres one in a older issue of zoom or fast fours or something with a turbo'd one. It made bugger all power man. I wouldnt say its worth the hassle, danger and unreliability of it...

    Replace with 1GGTE or go a 1J...

    Jase,
I think I'll be sticking with the stock motor untill It dies, at least that way I'll have my licence for a bit longer.

Thread Dig. if it is the White IS200 with Red leather interior... we turbocharged that about 7 years ago.. my mate sold it about a year afterwards (was making just under 200rwhp on 6psi - the magazine said 8 or 10psi i think)... the new owner had the Unichip piggyback retuned with some 2AZ-FE injectors (bigger than the stock ones which were kinda at the limit), ran 10psi and made 230rwhp..

that new owner worked at toyota as a grease monkey... sold it about 2 years ago, to fund a FD RX7 project.. still was boosting it's little heart out, and performing quite respectfully.. the torque curve was especially nice, thanks to VVTI and the choice of a relativly small (RB25) Turbo..

so reliability - pretty good i think.. considering it didn't even make half that power before..
